Natron Energy has announced plans to construct a groundbreaking $1.4 billion sodium-ion battery gigafactory in Edgecombe County, North Carolina. This facility will significantly scale up production capacity, creating over 1,000 local jobs and contributing $3.4 billion to the state’s economy over the next 12 years. The project is backed by a North Carolina Job Development Investment Grant (JDIG) and marks a major advancement in the energy storage sector.
Key Highlights:
- Facility to produce 24 GW of sodium-ion batteries annually.
- $1.4 billion investment supported by North Carolina’s JDIG.
- Over 1,000 high-quality jobs to be created in Edgecombe County.
- Natron’s sodium-ion batteries offer higher power density and faster recharge times than lithium-ion batteries.
- Non-flammable and free from lithium, cobalt, copper, or nickel.
- Expected to boost North Carolina’s economy by $3.4 billion over 12 years.
The facility is expected to produce 24 GW of sodium-ion batteries annually, scaling up Natron’s current production capacity by 40 times. This expansion will accelerate the commercialization of their technology while supporting over 1,000 high-quality, local jobs in the clean energy sector. The project is partially funded by a Job Development Investment Grant (JDIG) approved by North Carolina’s Economic Investment Committee, highlighting the state’s commitment to clean energy initiatives.
“Today is a momentous day for Natron Energy,” stated Colin Wessells, Founder and co-CEO of Natron Energy. He emphasized the importance of North Carolina’s leadership in clean energy and the strategic choice of Edgecombe County as the location for this ambitious project.
Natron’s sodium-ion batteries are the only UL-listed sodium-ion batteries on the market, offering unique advantages over traditional lithium-ion batteries, including higher power density, faster recharge times, and enhanced safety features. These batteries do not require lithium, cobalt, copper, or nickel, making them a more sustainable alternative.
Governor Roy Cooper celebrated the announcement, noting that this facility will help the nation reduce greenhouse gas emissions while creating significant job opportunities in eastern North Carolina. The project is expected to grow the state’s economy by $3.4 billion over the next 12 years.
The Edgecombe County gigafactory will play a crucial role in advancing Natron’s position as a leader in the next battery revolution, supporting various industries, including data centers, EV fast charging, and grid energy storage.
Natron’s innovative approach to battery technology, using patented Prussian blue electrodes, ensures a faster charge cycle and longer battery life, without the need for conflict minerals. This facility underscores Natron’s commitment to driving the future of energy storage with sustainable and reliable solutions.
