A new survey by Verra Mobility finds that 47% of Americans plan to purchase an electric vehicle (EV) within the next five years, with 21% aiming to make the switch in the next one to two years. The second edition of the company’s consumer perceptions report, The State of EVs: 2025 Report on Smart Mobility, highlights evolving attitudes toward EV adoption, charging infrastructure, and maintenance concerns. The survey polled 2,000 Americans aged 25 and older, revealing key insights into consumer readiness for the EV transition.

Key Highlights

  • More than half (51%) would buy an EV today if upfront costs weren’t a factor.
  • Only 7% of respondents currently own an EV.
  • Range anxiety remains a significant concern, with 71% feeling apprehensive about EV driving range.
  • 46% of consumers cite charging station availability as their biggest concern.
  • 40% are unaware of the location of their nearest EV charging station.
  • 73% wouldn’t know how to charge an EV rental car.
  • 63% believe EV maintenance costs are higher than those of gas-powered vehicles.
  • 42% think roadside assistance is more likely with an EV.

Despite concerns, consumer interest in EVs remains strong. The report aligns with research showing that 48% of municipal technology leaders expect EVs to dominate personal vehicle use within the next decade. While market reports suggest slowing EV adoption, Verra Mobility’s findings indicate steady progress, albeit at a cautious pace.

“Although there have been market indications that EV adoption rates are slowing down, our analysis indicates steady, albeit more cautious adoption and interest,” said Steve Lalla, executive vice president of Commercial Services at Verra Mobility. “The overall message we continue to hear is ‘it’s not if, but when’ EVs will constitute a much more significant share of vehicles on the road.”
