Altilium and its company, recell.store, have announced the launch of the All Battery Index (ABI), establishing the United Kingdom’s first dedicated benchmark for the market value of end-of-life (EoL) electric vehicle batteries. As the volume of used EV batteries grows with accelerated EV adoption, there has been a lack of a standardized or transparent reference point for their valuation until now. The ABI aims to fill this critical gap, providing a data-driven view of the UK’s battery recycling market.
Key Highlights
- Altilium and recell.store have launched the All Battery Index (ABI), the first benchmark for end-of-life EV battery values in the UK.
- The index provides a credible, data-driven valuation for a market that has historically been fragmented and opaque.
- It utilizes a proprietary grading system, R Grades (R1-R4), to classify battery packs based on their condition and suitability for reuse or recycling.
- The initiative seeks to increase market transparency and accelerate the growth of a circular economy for critical battery minerals in the UK.
Addressing an Opaque Market
The rapid increase in electric vehicles has created a corresponding rise in batteries reaching their end-of-life. Previously, the market for these used batteries was fragmented and lacked transparency, making it difficult to assess their true value. The All Battery Index (ABI) provides a necessary solution by offering a consistent and credible benchmark. This tool is designed to assist a wide range of industry participants, including investors, recyclers, fleet operators, insurers, and OEMs, in assessing the fair market value of used battery packs. By introducing this level of clarity, the ABI is positioned to become the definitive benchmark for battery reuse and recycling in the UK.
A Data-Driven Valuation Framework
The ABI’s valuation model is built upon real-time market data and is adjusted using recell.store’s proprietary grading and pricing framework. Published monthly, the index provides a robust price benchmark for participants across the EV battery value chain. The first index, released for May 2025, covers the 15 top-selling EV models in the UK, with the Audi Q4 e-tron and the Polestar 2 recording the highest initial values.
The framework analyzes key physical and economic parameters to determine a battery’s worth. These factors include:
- Remaining capacity
- Pack size
- Estimated recoverable metal value
- Recyclability and repurposing suitability
A core component of the index is its ABI Grading System, which standardizes quality for repurposers and recyclers. Battery packs are assigned an “R Grade” from R1 to R4 based on their State of Health (SOH) and State of Charge (SOC). An R4 grade, for instance, signifies a high-value pack with over 80% SOH suitable for second-life use, while an R1 grade indicates an end-of-life pack best suited for recycling. Any battery listings without available data on their condition are defaulted to the R1 classification.
Pioneering a Circular Economy
The launch of the ABI is a significant step toward creating an efficient and transparent trading environment for EoL batteries, similar to other established commodities. By providing a clear pricing structure, the index supports the growth of a circular economy for essential battery minerals within the UK.
This initiative is led by recell.store, the UK’s first online marketplace for end-of-life EV batteries. Backed by the clean technology group Altilium, a prominent EV battery recycler, recell.store leverages an extensive network of industry partners to offer a large inventory of battery packs. The platform provides a safe and effective solution for businesses to buy and sell these valuable assets, ensuring they find a new purpose beyond their initial use.
