Located in Atoka, Oklahoma, North America’s inaugural commercial-scale plant dedicated to recycling lithium-ion batteries has begun operations. This facility, a pioneering effort by Green Li-ion, is set to handle unsorted “black mass” from spent batteries, transforming it into sustainable, battery-grade cathode precursor, lithium, and anode materials. This marks a significant step in enhancing the sustainability of the electric vehicle (EV) industry by localizing the entire recycling process.
Key Highlights:
- First of its kind in North America, the plant integrates Green Li-ion’s patented technology to recycle lithium-ion batteries into high-purity cathode and anode materials.
- Environmentally beneficial, the technology reduces greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90% compared to the production of virgin materials.
- Flexible solutions are offered through licensing or tolling agreements, catering to various needs of manufacturers and recyclers.
- Support from the Inflation Reduction Act bolsters the economic appeal of domestic battery recycling operations.
Green Li-ion, a leader in lithium-ion battery recycling technology, operates this facility within an existing recycling site. The company utilizes its novel Green-hydrorejuvenation™ technology to produce materials directly from battery waste, bypassing the need for overseas processing. Unlike traditional methods that require sorting and shredding before reaching the black mass stage, this plant accepts unsorted waste, streamlining the process and drastically cutting production time to just 12 hours.
“Green Li-ion’s installation closes a critical gap in the North American battery recycling supply chain,” said Leon Farrant, CEO and Co-Founder of Green Li-ion. The company’s innovative approach not only meets but exceeds the purity standards required by battery cell producers, achieving 99 percent purity and offering a fully customizable output based on client specifications.
Green Li-ion’s strategic location in Atoka and the modular nature of its systems enable rapid deployment and scalability. This facility can process enough material daily to produce the equivalent of 72,000 smartphone batteries, with plans to significantly expand capacity.
“The Atoka City Industrial Development Authority is excited to include Green Li-ion as a valued community partner situated within our Atoka Heavy Industrial Park,” stated Carol Ervin, ACIDA Director. This collaboration underscores the economic and social benefits brought to local communities through innovative recycling technologies.
Moreover, the Inflation Reduction Act plays a pivotal role by providing financial incentives for companies engaged in domestic battery manufacturing and recycling, making operations like Green Li-ion’s even more viable and attractive.
