Polestar Energy Expands Grid Rewards Across Europe

Polestar expands its Energy program with grid rewards in Germany and France, offering EV drivers up to €300 in annual savings through smart charging and grid stability participation.

Polestar is broadening its Polestar Energy program with grid rewards in Germany and France. The expansion aims to cut total cost of ownership for EV drivers. Customers can now earn savings of up to €300 per year by allowing smart charging to support grid stability. Additionally, the automaker has introduced car-controlled smart charging for the Polestar 2 and Polestar 4.

Highlights

  • Grid rewards now available in Germany and France, offering up to 50% savings per home charging session through an Intelligent Octopus energy contract
  • Car-controlled smart charging eliminates the need for a specific integrated home charger for Polestar 2 and Polestar 4
  • Polestar Energy operates in 12 European markets, with full smart charging, solar integration, and grid rewards in six countries
  • Smart charging reduces CO₂e footprint by shifting charging to periods with higher renewable energy availability

How Grid Rewards Work for Polestar Owners

Polestar launched its Energy program in late 2024. By mid-2025, the service had expanded into 12 European markets. It already offered smart charging and home solar integration. Now, in partnership with Octopus, the brand is layering in grid rewards.

Grid rewards compensate drivers who allow their vehicle to adjust charging times. This flexibility helps stabilize local electricity grids. In return, drivers receive lower charging costs. For instance, German owners using Polestar Energy with an Intelligent Octopus contract can save up to 50% on each home session. That translates to annual savings of approximately €300.

Olivier Loedel, Head of Product Software Management at Polestar, said the expansion marks a key step in reducing ownership costs. He noted that unlocking up to €300 in annual savings addresses rising energy prices and growing grid stability concerns across Europe.

Car-Controlled Smart Charging Removes Hardware Barriers

Polestar has also rolled out car-controlled smart charging across all Polestar Energy markets. This feature is available for the Polestar 2 and Polestar 4. It was delivered through the Polestar Energy app.

Previously, drivers needed a compatible integrated home charger to use smart charging. That requirement has been eliminated. The vehicle now manages charging schedules directly. It responds to energy price signals, household demand, and grid conditions without additional hardware.

Loedel emphasized that most EV charging happens at home. Removing the charger compatibility barrier opens Polestar Energy benefits to a larger customer base. As a result, more drivers can reduce their electricity costs through the app.

Environmental and Cost Benefits of Smart Charging

Smart charging delivers more than financial savings. It also lowers the carbon footprint of a vehicle’s use phase. The system prioritizes charging during periods when electricity prices are lowest. These windows typically coincide with peak renewable energy generation on the grid.

Therefore, drivers simultaneously reduce costs and environmental impact. The Polestar Energy app is available as a free download in supported markets.

Market Availability

Polestar Energy with smart charging, solar integration, and grid rewards is available in six countries:

  • Belgium
  • France
  • Germany
  • Netherlands
  • Switzerland
  • United Kingdom

Meanwhile, smart charging and solar integration without grid rewards are available in Austria, Denmark, Italy, Norway, Spain, and Sweden.
