Polestar, a leader in the electric vehicle market, has recently unveiled its 2023 Sustainability Report, marking significant strides towards its environmental goals. The company reported a 9% reduction in relative greenhouse gas emissions per car sold this year, reflecting its commitment to eco-friendly practices and sustainable growth.
Key Highlights:
- Reduction of 3.4 tCO2e per car sold compared to 2022.
- Strategic focus on sustainable materials, renewable energy, and energy efficiency.
- Enhanced traceability for lithium and nickel in batteries, building on previous cobalt and mica tracking.
- Launch of a new digital platform to improve sustainability data collection and compliance.
Fredrika Klarén, Head of Sustainability at Polestar, emphasized the company’s proactive approach to environmental challenges. “Our vision is clear – we want to accelerate the EV-transition while bringing in more sustainable and innovative solutions to make electric cars even better. We need to acknowledge that our industry still has a huge potential for improvement when it comes to disclosing concrete plans for achieving its climate pledges. This year we are sharing the work we do to make our climate roadmap more concrete, as we navigate towards our 2040 climate goal.”
In 2023, Polestar also made significant advances in battery component traceability and sustainability risk management. The introduction of blockchain technology has enhanced the traceability of critical minerals like lithium and nickel, crucial for the batteries in the new Polestar 3 model. This capability stems from successful monitoring practices established in previous years for other minerals.
Moreover, the company’s newly launched digital platform aims to streamline the collection and analysis of sustainability data, ensuring greater transparency and adherence to environmental standards and regulations.
Polestar’s efforts in 2023 reflect a strong commitment to reducing its environmental impact and setting a benchmark for the auto industry. The detailed roadmap laid out in their sustainability report is a testament to their dedication to achieving their ambitious climate targets by 2040. For more details, access the full report here.
By strategically addressing each facet of its production and operational processes, Polestar not only advances its own sustainability goals but also sets an industry standard for others to follow.
