Polestar, in partnership with Mattel’s Hot Wheels brand, announces the launch of its 2024 Design Contest. This collaboration aims to blend Polestar’s innovative electric vehicle design with the playful, imaginative spirit of Hot Wheels, the world’s top-selling toy brand. The contest challenges designers to create the ultimate Hot Wheels collectible, incorporating Polestar’s design principles for a chance to see their concept become a real Hot Wheels product.
The contest is a unique opportunity for designers to explore the limits of their creativity, with the only stipulation being that the design must be feasible as a 1:64 scale Hot Wheels die-cast model. This includes detailed visualizations of the vehicle’s interior and its immediate environment. Maximilian Missoni, Polestar’s Head of Design, encourages participants to “let their imagination run riot” and explore beyond the conventional boundaries of vehicle design.
Selected entrants will benefit from personalized guidance from Polestar’s design team, enhancing their proposals for the final judgment. This mentorship reflects the contest’s history of fostering collaboration and innovation within the design community.
Since its inception in 2020, the Polestar Design Contest has attracted a wide array of talents, from students to professionals, showcasing inventive concepts like pollution-cleaning cars, futuristic airships, and even micro-space habitats. Last year’s winner, the Synergy concept car, was a testament to the contest’s emphasis on collaboration, evolving from over 600 entries to a fully realized design through the concerted effort of multiple winners and Polestar’s design experts.
Ted Wu, Mattel’s VP and Global Head of Vehicle Design, highlighted the shared commitment of Polestar and Hot Wheels to pushing the boundaries of design, expressing eagerness to see the innovative concepts this partnership will bring to the forefront.
The competition opens on March 5, 2024, with a submission deadline of April 16, 2024. Winners are expected to be announced in the last quarter of the year, marking another milestone in the ongoing collaboration between Polestar and Hot Wheels that not only celebrates design excellence but also inspires the next generation of designers to dream big and think creatively.
