A panel of top automotive designers has recognized the Renault 5 E-Tech electric as the 2024 Production Car Design of the Year in the prestigious Car Design News (CDN) awards. The announcement took place during an exclusive event in London, underscoring the model’s success as a modern interpretation of a beloved automotive icon.

  • Expert design panel: The judging committee featured leading professionals from renowned brands such as Aston Martin, Bentley, Lamborghini, and Mercedes-Benz.
  • Engineering prowess: The car’s proportions, including its wide tracks and 18-inch wheels, remain faithful to the 2021 show car despite production feasibility constraints.
  • Modern reinvention: With a choice of two battery sizes and a driving range of up to 248 miles*, the Renault 5 E-Tech electric merges historic appeal with contemporary electric vehicle standards.
  • Early access: Enthusiasts can secure priority ordering through a VIP R Pass for £150, ensuring early delivery of this highly anticipated model.

The newly crowned winner is featured in the 200-page 2024 Car Design Review 11 yearbook, offering readers an in-depth look at what sets it apart. The judging panel’s decision reflects a focus on authentic brand heritage, balanced innovation, and the careful integration of the latest electric vehicle technology.

“Drawing on brand heritage is a credible strategy if executed carefully with design skill and new technology, which Renault has done superbly with its 5 E-Tech,” said James McLachlan, editor of Car Design News.

He added: “Well ahead of the pack through our jury’s numerous positive votes and building on the 5 prototype’s win in the Concept Car Design category of these awards just a few years back, the Renault 5 E-Tech electric is a worthy winner of the 2024 CDN Production Car Design of the Year award.”

Gilles Vidal, VP Design, Renault Brand & Ampere, attended the ceremony and noted, “This award is a proud moment for everyone involved in bringing the Renault 5 E-Tech to life. Our goal was to capture the spirit of an icon while infusing it with modernity and innovation, honoring its legacy while reimagining it for a new era. It’s incredibly rewarding to see this vision resonate with such a respected panel of designers. This recognition reflects the collective passion and hard work of the entire team.”

The model’s sleek exterior features minimal overhangs, flush wheels, and stands at less than four meters in length. Its production version closely echoes the initial show car’s form, confirming that the design vision remains intact through to the final road-going model.

Along with a vibrant selection of paint finishes, including Pop Green! and Pop Yellow!, the Renault 5 E-Tech electric aligns cutting-edge technology with classic inspiration. Buyers in the UK can expect pricing from £22,995 OTR when sales commence in January. Multiple trims are available—evolution, techno, and iconic five—all equipped with a heat-pump as standard, ensuring an optimal blend of comfort, efficiency, and style.

With its emphasis on electrification, innovation, and heritage, Renault’s latest creation reflects the brand’s ongoing transformation and commitment to offering a compelling, modern range.
