Renault Group is enhancing electric vehicle safety by offering its Fireman Access system under a free licensing policy. Developed through a unique collaboration with fire services, this patented innovation allows emergency responders to extinguish EV battery fires in just minutes—a process that previously took hours.
With this move, Renault underscores its dedication to global road safety, aligning with its partnership with the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Road Safety. The Fireman Access system is now available for licensing through Renault’s open collaborative platform, fostering industry-wide adoption and improvement.

Key Highlights:
- Fireman Access enables quick extinguishing of EV battery fires, reducing time from hours to minutes.
- Free licenses available to car manufacturers and parts suppliers via Renault’s universal patent platform.
- Licensees agree to share future system upgrades with the community.
- The innovation features an adhesive disc over the battery casing, which is dislodged during fires to allow direct water access to battery cells.
- Seven patents protect Fireman Access, now standard on all Renault Group EVs and plug-in hybrids (Renault, Dacia, Alpine, Mobilize).
- Part of Renault’s Human First road safety program, focusing on prevention, protection, and rescue.
Luca de Meo, CEO of Renault Group, emphasized the importance of this initiative: “When it comes to safety, we need to break down all barriers. Making Fireman Access freely available aligns with our commitment to making mobility safer worldwide.”

The announcement coincides with Renault’s participation in the 4th Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety in Marrakech, highlighting the company’s long-standing commitment to road safety. Renault Group Morocco also uses the platform to strengthen partnerships with local safety services and promote road safety education through its foundation.
Renault’s safety initiatives boast over 2,000 safety-related patents, 600 engineers dedicated to safety, and a 15-year partnership with fire services, training over 5,000 firefighters across 19 countries. With the Fireman Access system, Renault takes a significant step in ensuring safer EVs and quicker emergency responses, benefiting drivers and first responders worldwide.
