SES AI Corporation (“SES AI”) has achieved a significant milestone in the commercialization of its advanced Li-Metal battery technology. The company’s 100 Ah Li-Metal cells have become the first in the industry to successfully pass the stringent safety tests mandated by China’s GB38031-2020 Electric Vehicles Traction Battery Safety Standard. This achievement underscores SES AI’s leadership in the development of high-performance batteries for electric vehicles (EVs) and urban air mobility (UAM).

Key Highlights:

  • SES AI’s 100 Ah Li-Metal cells are the first in the automotive sector to meet the GB38031-2020 safety standard.
  • GB38031-2020 is a mandatory national standard in China, the world’s largest EV market, designed specifically for the electric vehicle sector.
  • The safety standard includes rigorous tests such as overcharge, over-discharge, external short circuit, heating, temperature cycling, and crushing.
  • Passing these tests solidifies SES AI’s commitment to safety and enhances its commercialization efforts.
  • SES AI has also introduced an AI for Safety system capable of predicting and preventing almost 100% of safety incidents.

The GB38031-2020 safety standard is critical in the global EV market, particularly in China. This standard includes a series of demanding tests that ensure batteries can effectively manage safety risks under extreme conditions. SES AI’s successful compliance with these tests not only highlights its commitment to safety but also strengthens its position as a leader in the industry. This achievement follows last year’s acquisition of the UN38.3 safety certificate, further reinforcing SES AI’s dedication to excellence.

Qichao Hu, Founder and CEO of SES AI, remarked, “The results are highly encouraging, affirming our decade-long commitment to refining Li-Metal chemistry and enhancing the safety of Li-Metal batteries. For abuse tests, passing GB38031-2020 is a key milestone. It’s also the first time in the industry that a high energy density cell such as Li-Metal passes the rigorous safety tests of GB38031-2020.”

This milestone builds on SES AI’s earlier success, including its recent advancement in a joint development agreement (JDA) with Hyundai, positioning it as the only Li-Metal battery company with two automotive B-sample agreements in progress. During the Q2 shareholder meeting, SES AI introduced its All-in-on-AI strategy, which leverages AI for Science, Manufacturing, and Safety to accelerate the commercialization of Li-Metal batteries.

SES AI Corporation (NYSE: SES), founded in 2012 and headquartered in Boston, is pioneering the future of electric transportation with its cutting-edge Li-Metal batteries. The company operates globally with facilities in Singapore, Shanghai, and Seoul, utilizing AI to drive innovation across its business. More information is available at SES AI’s website.
