San Francisco has marked a milestone in sustainable transportation with the installation of the city’s first curbside electric vehicle (EV) chargers at 55 Filmore Street. Led by climate tech company it’s electric, this initiative under the San Francisco EV Curbside Charging Pilot Program aims to make EV charging more accessible. The launch event, attended by Board of Supervisors President Rafael Mandelman and city officials, highlighted the collaboration between the San Francisco Environment Department (SFE), San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), and Public Works.
Key Highlights
- First Curbside Chargers: Two Level 2 chargers installed by it’s electric deliver 7.6 kW, adding about 25 miles of range per hour.
- Strategic Location: Chargers are outside the IBEW Local 6 building, supporting unionized labor.
- Innovative Technology: Uses behind-the-meter connections, minimizing grid strain and speeding installation.
- City Goals: Supports San Francisco’s target of 1,760 public EV chargers by 2030.
- Public Access: Open to all, with a 2-hour limit for non-permit holders during peak hours.
The chargers address the growing demand for EV infrastructure, with one-third of recent car sales in San Francisco being electric. The city has already expanded to 1,152 public charging ports, a 470% increase since 2019. This pilot program explores curbside charging as a complement to existing options like garage and off-street charging.
It’s electric partners with property owners to install chargers at no cost to the city or building owners, offering passive income opportunities and promoting equitable access. The company will share pilot data to shape a citywide curbside charging policy. San Francisco’s commitment to sustainability, backed by streamlined permitting through the Emerging Technology Permit, positions the city as a leader in the transition to an all-electric future.
