Skycharger, a prominent developer of electric vehicle charging infrastructure, has been awarded a lease to construct and operate a state-of-the-art fast charging hub at San Francisco International Airport (SFO). The San Francisco Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the lease, which will see the development of an EV Hub designed to serve electric rideshare vehicles, airport customers, and the public. This decision follows a unanimous approval from the SFO Airport Commission in April.
Key Highlights
- Skycharger will develop a 24-port electric vehicle fast charging hub at San Francisco International Airport (SFO).
- The facility is set to serve rideshare fleets like Uber and Lyft, airport patrons with EVs, and the general public.
- Featuring advanced 400 kW charging ports supplied by Kempower, the hub is designed for rapid charging speeds and is future-proofed for next-generation vehicles.
- The project directly supports SFO’s goal of zero net carbon operations and helps meet the mandates of California’s Clean Miles Standard.

A Commitment to Sustainable Transportation
The new Skycharger EV Hub is a significant step in advancing SFO’s sustainability initiatives and aligns with California’s leadership in clean transportation technologies. The project is poised to meet a predicted surge in demand for EV charging, driven by California’s Clean Miles Standard, which mandates that 90% of miles traveled for rideshare services must be in electric vehicles by 2030. Based on utilization forecasts, Skycharger projects the hub will prevent over 200,000 tons of CO2 equivalent from entering the atmosphere within its first decade of operation.
Advanced Technology and Design
To ensure a seamless and efficient user experience, Skycharger is partnering with the engineering and construction firm Burns & McDonnell to build the facility. The hub’s design focuses on minimizing driver wait times by deploying high-capacity chargers that deliver some of the fastest charging rates available.
The 400 kW charging ports will not only service current EVs but also accommodate future vehicles designed for higher charging speeds and larger battery packs. To power this experience, Skycharger has chosen Kempower to supply its scalable fast-charging hardware, including 12 Power Cabinets and 24 Satellite dispensers that enable dynamic power distribution and high reliability. The site will also feature a convenience store for drivers.
Expanding Charging Infrastructure
This SFO project is the latest in a series of major developments for Skycharger. The company recently received a $10 million grant from the California Energy Commission (CEC) to build and operate two public electric truck stops along Interstate 5 in Southern California. Additionally, Skycharger was selected by the Port of San Diego (POSD) to construct a 70-port electric truck charging hub, which will be integrated with a solar array and battery energy storage system.
About Skycharger
Skycharger, a wholly owned subsidiary of Skyview Ventures, owns and manages a growing network of electric vehicle charging stations across seven states. Established in 2013, the company develops charging solutions for light, medium, and heavy-duty vehicles. Its network includes the West Coast Highway Corridor (WCHC), the fourth-largest DC fast charging network in California.
