Sion Power, a pioneer in lithium-metal battery technology, unveiled a new large-format cell production line for its Licerion® batteries, marking a pivotal step toward commercialization. Developed with Mühlbauer Group, this advancement showcases the scalability of Sion Power’s innovative technology for electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers. The company also strengthened its leadership team with key appointments to drive growth. Licerion® batteries promise to enhance EV performance by doubling energy density, cutting costs, and matching gas station refueling times, supporting both U.S. and global supply chains.
Key Highlights
- Enhanced Energy Density: Licerion® batteries deliver over 400 Wh/kg, twice that of traditional lithium-ion batteries, in the same size and weight.
- Cost Reduction: The technology is projected to lower the cost of a 200 kWh pack by 35%, thanks to a 15% reduction in cell material costs and a 20% decrease in cell count.
- Rapid Charging: Charging times rival the 8-minute average refueling time at gas stations, addressing a major EV adoption barrier.
- Production Capacity: The new fully automated line will produce 75MWh of 56 Ah lithium-metal cells annually, a leap from previous semi-automated processes.
Sion Power’s new production line, exceeding 50 amp-hours per cell, meets automotive standards and supports technology development, joint efforts with partners, and customer validation. Tracy Kelly, president of Sion Power, emphasized that scaling from small prototypes to large-format cells is a critical hurdle many battery technologies fail to overcome. This facility bridges that gap, proving the real-world potential of lithium-metal batteries.
Pam Fletcher, CEO, highlighted that Licerion® technology outperforms graphite and silicon anode solutions. The line will supply test cells with LFP and NMC cathodes to partners like LGES and global OEMs, ensuring readiness for volume production by 2028. The company’s collaboration with Mühlbauer Group, which invested over 100 million euros in battery solutions, underscores this milestone.
To support commercialization, Sion Power appointed Liz Rojewski as COO and Mitch Hourtienne as CCO. Rojewski brings expertise from General Motors and startups like Cruise, while Hourtienne’s 25-year career includes securing major automotive contracts. These leaders will enhance operations and partnerships, reinforcing Sion Power’s role in the EV supply chain. For more details, visit www.sionpower.com or www.muehlbauer.de.
