Skanska has successfully concluded a 90-day pilot program of the Volvo EC230 Electric excavator, marking a significant step towards sustainability in construction. This initiative, conducted on the Purple (D Line) Extension Transit Project in Los Angeles, showcases the company’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions through the adoption of zero-emission construction equipment.
The pilot aimed to assess the electric excavator’s performance in real-world construction scenarios, comparing its efficacy with traditional diesel-powered models. The Volvo EC230 Electric not only met the required construction tasks but also demonstrated potential for significant reductions in carbon emissions and operational costs. Specifically, the pilot recorded a 66% decrease in carbon emissions per hour and a 74% reduction in cost per hour.
From a health and safety perspective, the electric model offered considerable advantages, producing less noise and vibration. This not only benefits the operators by providing a more comfortable work environment but also minimizes the impact of construction activities on local communities. Operator feedback highlighted the excavator’s ease of use and efficient performance.
Mason Ford, Skanska USA Civil’s director of sustainability and equipment services, emphasized the pilot’s role in advancing sustainable construction practices. “Skanska is proud to be a part of this pilot with Volvo which can serve as a catalyst for the evolution and adoption of lower emission construction practices,” he stated. The project aligns with Skanska’s broader environmental goals, which include a 70% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030.
The Volvo EC230 Electric excavator, provided by Sunbelt Rentals for the pilot, has seen global use, including recent applications in Europe by Skanska. This trial not only underscores Skanska’s leadership in sustainable construction but also contributes to the wider
