A recent survey commissioned by MINI USA reveals that Americans remain committed to purchasing electric vehicles (EVs) despite a changing market. Key findings include strong interest among younger generations and a focus on charging infrastructure over range as a primary consideration.
Key Highlights:
- Charging Infrastructure Over Range: The survey shows that charging infrastructure is the main driver impacting EV consideration.
- Steady Driving Habits: Americans’ daily driving habits have remained largely unchanged and are well within the range offerings of most EVs.
- Positive Sentiment: The survey indicates that 60% of consumers would consider purchasing an EV, with a significant interest from Gen Z (72%) and Millennials (70%).
- Optimism for Future Adoption: Around 60% of respondents believe that the market will meet or closely approach the EPA’s target of 56% EV sales by 2032.

Survey Insights
The survey, conducted by Engine’s CARAVAN® on behalf of MINI USA, involved 1,013 adults and revealed that American consumers’ opinions on EVs have remained stable over the past year. 58% of respondents reported no change in their opinion, while 28% had a positive change and 14% a negative change.
Generational Differences
Generational differences were evident in the survey results. Younger consumers, particularly Gen Z and Millennials, are more inclined towards purchasing EVs compared to older generations. Gen Z (72%) and Millennials (70%) showed the highest interest in EVs, while confidence in the charging infrastructure is much higher among Gen Z (50%) compared to Boomers (12%).
Industry Impact
The automotive industry is heavily influenced by consumer sentiment, especially in light of the EPA’s new emissions standards. Mike Peyton, Vice President of MINI of the Americas, commented on the high customer interest in electrification and the upcoming release of new EV models, such as the MINI Countryman SE.
Challenges and Expectations
While charging infrastructure remains a concern, fast charging is a major emphasis for the industry. The survey highlighted that 80% of Gen Z expects charging to take an hour or less, compared to 70% for other generations.

Driving Range and Costs
Most consumers (71%) currently drive less than 75 miles a day, making the range of over 200 miles per charge offered by most EVs, including the new 2025 MINI Countryman SE, sufficient for daily commutes. However, the overall cost of EVs is a significant factor for consumers. 39% cited cost as a main driver for hesitancy in purchasing an EV. Families are more open to EVs if efficiency savings offset pricing concerns, with 68% of respondents with children more likely to consider an EV compared to 47% overall.
Survey Methodology
The survey was conducted online from April 19-21, 2024, among a sample of 1,013 adults aged 18 and older. This study continues the series of surveys conducted in 2020, 2022, and 2023.
