Toyota Motor North America (TMNA) has announced a strategic partnership with WeaveGrid, furthering its commitment to enhancing the customer experience for battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). This collaboration, supported by an investment from Toyota’s Woven Capital growth fund, aims to integrate Toyota’s electrified vehicles seamlessly with the electric grid while facilitating an efficient and resilient energy transition.
Key Highlights
- Toyota’s investment in WeaveGrid supports the development of seamless home charging experiences for BEV and PHEV customers.
- The partnership focuses on grid integration to ensure reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy solutions for electrified vehicles.
- Toyota aims to maximize load flexibility benefits and explore potential financial advantages for customers.
- The collaboration also investigates dual uses for vehicle batteries, including home energy needs and vehicle propulsion.
Toyota’s investment aligns with its strategy to prepare for a significant rise in BEVs and PHEVs, with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) estimating a tenfold increase in these vehicles on U.S. roads by 2030. This shift is expected to drive substantial growth in electricity consumption, requiring advanced solutions to meet demand.
Christopher Yang, Group Vice President of Toyota EV Charging Solutions, emphasized the company’s dedication to providing a high-quality ownership experience. “Toyota is committed to making investments in technologies and solutions to provide greater insights for our customers and electric utility partners into how vehicles will interface with their homes and the electric grid,” Yang said.
Toyota and WeaveGrid are also working with partner utilities to launch programs that support grid resilience and affordability, ensuring customers can charge their vehicles reliably and potentially at reduced costs. This initiative reflects Toyota’s mission to contribute to a carbon-neutral society while maintaining its reputation for customer-focused innovation.
WeaveGrid adopts a systems-oriented approach, recognizing the critical need for greater integration between the energy and transportation sectors. This collaboration aims to help utilities adapt to the rapid electrification wave, ensuring a seamless transition for both automakers and consumers.
“As Toyota aims to expand the number of BEV and PHEV vehicles we offer, our goal remains to ensure the ownership experience is as seamless and customer-friendly as it has been with the vehicles we’ve built our reputation on in the U.S. over the last 67 years,” Yang added.
