VinFast has signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Durango Drivers’ Union in Mexico, marking a collaborative step toward a greener future in Mexican public transport. This agreement may lead to the Durango Drivers’ Union purchasing 3,000 VF 5 electric cars and 300 electric buses for use in Mexico, highlighting the global appeal of VinFast’s EVs and their relevance to diverse market needs.

Key Highlights:

  • Potential Fleet Upgrade: The Durango Drivers’ Union is considering a significant shift from gasoline-powered to electric vehicles, potentially acquiring 3,000 VF 5 electric cars and 300 electric buses.
  • Comprehensive Charging Infrastructure: VinFast, along with its affiliate V-Green and CTM, will explore the development and implementation of a charging infrastructure across Durango, supporting both public and private EV needs.
  • Environmental and Economic Impact: Transitioning to EVs is projected to lower CO2 emissions and reduce operational costs for the union, while also creating new job opportunities in the installation and management of charging stations.
  • VinFast’s Role in EV Ecosystem: A subsidiary of Vietnam’s Vingroup, VinFast brings its range of electric vehicles, already popular across markets in Asia and expanding globally, to the forefront of Mexico’s green transport initiatives.

As part of the MOU, the Union of Drivers and Related Workers of Durango, a member of the Confederation of Mexican Workers (CTM), will engage in negotiations for purchasing VinFast’s electric vehicles, aligning with a broader shift toward eco-friendly transportation in Durango City. This collaboration represents an opportunity to replace the union’s current gasoline-fueled fleet with sustainable alternatives, emphasizing a shared commitment to reducing environmental impact.

VinFast and CTM also aim to construct an extensive EV charging network in Durango. This infrastructure will cater to both personal and public vehicles, supporting a long-term transition to electric mobility. By reducing reliance on gasoline, this initiative not only curtails emissions but also offers economic advantages for drivers through reduced fuel expenses.

The partnership stands to benefit Durango’s transportation network by supporting fleet electrification and enhancing job creation through the installation and management of charging systems. VinFast’s compact e-SUV VF 5 model and electric buses offer practical solutions tailored to public transit and private use, underscoring VinFast’s ongoing commitment to accessible, eco-friendly technology. In Vietnam, VinFast’s electric vehicles have already established a reputation for value, reliability, and smart technology, contributing significantly to the country’s shift toward green transport.

Ms. Pham Thuy Linh, Deputy CEO at VinFast, stated: “We are impressed by the State of Durango and CTM’s strong commitment to a green transition. This shared vision for a sustainable future aligns perfectly with VinFast’s core values. With our high-quality electric vehicles and our affiliates’ expertise in taxi operation and charging infrastructure, we are confident in our ability to support the State of Durango in realizing their vision, creating a lasting impact on the state and the broader Mexican landscape.”

Mr. Juan Erik Mercado Rangel, representing the Durango Drivers’ Union, added: “We are thrilled to collaborate with VinFast, a global EV brand. Their vehicles, their green mobility eco-system, as well as their grand vision and spirit of partnership have truly impressed us. CTM believes that this collaboration not only paves the way for enhanced transportation services but also positions us at the forefront of the global shift toward sustainable mobility.”

Mexico’s EV market is on the rise, with growing governmental interest in incentivizing the sector to support broader adoption. While still in the early stages, this trend positions Mexico as an emerging market for EV technologies, with potential for substantial environmental and economic gains.

VinFast, recognized globally for its diverse EV models, recently achieved a milestone as the top EV seller in Vietnam as of September 2024. This accomplishment showcases VinFast’s capacity to expand its influence across markets, including the U.S., Canada, and Europe.
