Volkswagen has won Electric Car Brand of the Year at the 2026 Which? Awards, recognized for the highest average test score among shortlisted electric vehicle brands. The accolade was announced at the Science Museum in London at the consumer champion’s annual awards ceremony, which celebrates brands across sectors from car manufacturing to banking and home entertainment. Which? combined findings from independent tests and undercover investigations with real-world feedback from thousands of consumers to determine this year’s winners. The award follows a string of recent product moves from Volkswagen UK, including the recent debut of the ID. Polo, the brand’s first entry in a new family of affordable small EVs.

Judges Cite Range Breadth and Test Scores
Which? said Volkswagen took the category on the strength of an electric lineup spanning multiple car types and price points. “Volkswagen captures the award with an extensive electric vehicle line-up that covers a wide variety of car types and price points, achieving the highest average test score among shortlisted brands,” the Which? judges said. “The manufacturer delivers best buy or near-best buy performance across its range, while actively listening and responding to consumer feedback to improve interior technology.”
The decision drew on independent laboratory testing, undercover investigations, and consumer survey data on reliability and ownership experience. Which?, part of the Consumers’ Association registered charity, has run independent product testing and consumer advocacy for more than 60 years.
VW UK Director Ties Award to Small-EV Push
Rod McLeod, Director of Volkswagen UK, framed the win as validation of the brand’s recent direction in electric vehicles.
“This award is a terrific validation of everything we have been working to achieve with our electric cars over the past few years,” McLeod said. “The brand has entered an exciting era with its new family of small electric cars. Starting with the ID. Polo – and with more to come, including the first ever fully electric GTI – these EVs combine everyday usability with cutting-edge electric technology and unmistakable Volkswagen design and character. They will also open the door to electric driving for many more customers, with prices that make electric cars more accessible than ever before.”
UK Market Context
Volkswagen was the UK’s best-selling new-car brand for the fifth consecutive year in 2025, with 178,607 passenger vehicles registered according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders. That represented an 8.84 percent market share, ahead of the 8.52 percent the brand recorded in 2024. Globally, Volkswagen delivered approximately 4.7 million vehicles in 2025, including roughly 382,000 all-electric models.
The brand also recently launched its ID. Promise program, a 100-day trial scheme allowing UK customers to return ID. models if they decide an EV does not suit their needs.
