The Volkswagen plant in Zwickau, Germany, has achieved a major milestone by producing its one millionth electric vehicle. This event underscores the plant’s critical role in the Volkswagen Group’s shift toward electric mobility and its leadership in sustainable automotive production.

Key Highlights

  • The Zwickau plant has manufactured its one millionth electric vehicle.
  • It produces six electric models for Volkswagen, Audi, and Cupra.
  • Nearly half of the Volkswagen Group’s registered electric cars originate from Zwickau.
  • Future plans emphasize competitiveness and entry into the circular economy.

The Zwickau facility has a long history, starting with combustion engine vehicles in 1904, including the famous Trabant during the GDR period. Its transition to electric vehicles began on November 4, 2019, with the ID.3, the first model built on the modular electric drive matrix (MEB). The last combustion vehicle was produced on June 26, 2020, marking a full switch to electric production.

Volkswagen Zwickau Plant Hits 1 Million EVs

Currently, the plant builds six electric models across three brands: Volkswagen (ID.3, ID.4, ID.5), Audi (Q4 e-tron, Q4 Sportback e-tron), and Cupra (Born). The transformation was completed in just 26 months, with ID.5 production starting in January 2022. The milestone vehicle, an ID.3 GTX Performance in Kings Red Metallic, will soon reach a customer in Bavaria.

The plant’s output is vital to the Volkswagen Group, which has delivered 2.3 million MEB vehicles worldwide. Almost every second electric car registered by the Group comes from Zwickau. In Q1 2025, the Group held a 26% market share in Europe’s all-electric vehicle segment.

Danny Auerswald, Chairman of the Board of Management at Volkswagen Sachsen GmbH, commended the workforce: “One million electric cars is a testament to our team’s resilience and quality delivery despite challenges.” Uwe Kunstmann, Chairman of the General Works Council, added: “Zwickau’s shift from combustion to electric proves our reliability and innovation.”

Looking forward, the plant aims to stay competitive and explore the circular economy, ensuring its continued prominence in the Volkswagen Group’s electric future.
