Volvo Cars has announced the all-electric EX60 mid-size SUV, marking the first Volvo vehicle to launch with Google’s Gemini AI assistant. The company describes the EX60 as its most intelligent and technologically advanced car to date, featuring a new core system called HuginCore that integrates hardware and software from Google, NVIDIA, and Qualcomm Technologies. The vehicle will be officially revealed on January 21, 2026.
Highlights
- First Volvo with Gemini AI: The EX60 integrates Google’s Gemini assistant for hands-free, natural language vehicle control and multi-turn conversations.
- 810 km range: The all-wheel drive configuration delivers up to 810 km on a single charge under WLTP testing standards.
- Advanced computing: The vehicle combines Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Cockpit Platform with NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Orin, enabling over 250 trillion operations per second.
- Rapid charging: The EX60 can add up to 340 km of range in ten minutes using a 400 kW fast charger.
HuginCore Platform Powers AI Integration
The EX60 introduces HuginCore, Volvo’s newly named core system encompassing the electrical architecture, core computer, zone controllers, and software. Named after a bird in Norse mythology, the platform represents nearly a decade of collaboration between Volvo Cars and Google.
“The new EX60 is full of human-centric technology designed to enhance your life behind the wheel,” said Anders Bell, Chief Engineering and Technology Officer at Volvo Cars. “HuginCore, our state-of-the-art system of hardware and software, combines our in-house developed technology with the best services and technologies from tech leaders such as Google, NVIDIA and Qualcomm Technologies.”
Gemini enables drivers to manage complex tasks through natural conversation without memorizing specific commands. Practical applications include retrieving hotel booking addresses from email, checking cargo dimensions, and planning road trips. The system reduces driver distraction by minimizing the need to interact with the central display.
Processing Power and Connectivity
The EX60 utilizes Qualcomm’s next-generation Snapdragon Cockpit Platform, providing the highest processing power in any Volvo vehicle. The Snapdragon Auto Connectivity Platform delivers continuous connectivity, with four years of complimentary unlimited data included.
NVIDIA’s DRIVE platform anchors the vehicle’s computing architecture, featuring:
- NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Orin system-on-a-chip
- DriveOS safety-certified operating system
- Accelerated computing for real-time sensor processing
The combined processing capability enables responsive infotainment performance, with quick screen responses, instant map loading, and improved voice assistant comprehension.
Safety and Continuous Learning
HuginCore processes data from an extensive sensor array to maintain precise situational awareness. The system supports real-time driver assistance by anticipating hazards and enabling confident responses to unexpected situations.
With over 250 trillion operations per second, the EX60 learns continuously from driving experiences. The vehicle draws on anonymized data from Volvo’s global fleet, including accident and near-miss information, to improve safety performance over time.
Over-the-air updates through the Volvo Cars Superset tech stack ensure the vehicle improves after purchase. Future Gemini integration will enable camera-based visual recognition, allowing the assistant to answer questions about the vehicle’s surroundings.
Range and Charging Performance
The EX60 achieves preliminary WLTP-rated range figures that exceed recently announced competitors:
- Up to 810 km on a single charge (AWD configuration)
- 340 km added in ten minutes at 400 kW charging stations
Volvo notes that actual range varies based on charge level, weather, vehicle specification, temperature, topography, driving style, and speed.
