Volvo Starts EX60 Production in Sweden as European Orders Surge

Volvo Cars has started EX60 production at its Torslanda plant in Sweden, with customer deliveries set for early summer 2026 as European order volumes outpace internal forecasts.

Volvo Cars has begun production of the fully electric EX60 mid-size SUV at its Torslanda plant in Gothenburg, Sweden, with first customer deliveries scheduled for early summer. The milestone follows a March announcement that European order volumes outpaced internal forecasts, prompting the automaker to expand 2026 output.

Highlights

  • EX60 production has begun at Torslanda, with customer deliveries starting in early summer 2026
  • The model is the first fully electric Volvo designed, developed, and built in Sweden
  • Volvo plans to keep the Torslanda plant running one extra week this summer — a first in company history — to meet order volumes
  • Preliminary range estimate is up to 400 miles, with 10–80 percent charging in 16 minutes

First Fully Electric Volvo Built in Sweden

The EX60 is the first fully electric Volvo to be designed, developed, and manufactured in the company’s home country. Production takes place at Torslanda, Volvo’s largest plant, located outside its Gothenburg headquarters. The company positions the model as a long-term anchor for premium electric vehicle development and manufacturing in Western Sweden.

Volvo projects the EX60 to become one of Sweden’s largest export products by value, based on its volume ambitions for the model. The company frames the launch as economically significant for Gothenburg and the broader Western Sweden automotive cluster.

“Today is an important milestone for our company and for Sweden as a whole, as we start to build the first EX60 customer cars,” said Håkan Samuelsson, Volvo Cars CEO. “We are now focused on a steady ramp-up of high-quality EX60 production, making sure this game-changing car will be a profitable growth driver in the coming years.”

Demand Outpaces Forecasts Ahead of U.S. Launch

The production start follows Volvo’s March decision to raise 2026 output after European retail orders exceeded internal targets across nearly all major markets. Sweden and Germany led initial demand. Order books for the United States and Asian markets are scheduled to open later this spring, which means total order volumes could climb further.

To accommodate demand, Volvo plans to keep the Torslanda plant operating one additional week this summer. The company states this would mark the first such extension in the plant’s history.

Range, Charging, and Pricing Claims

The EX60 was publicly unveiled in January and is built on Volvo’s SPA3 electric architecture with an 800-volt electrical system. Volvo states the vehicle delivers up to 400 miles of range and charges from 10 to 80 percent in 16 minutes. The company positions EX60 pricing in line with its XC60 plug-in hybrid.

Range figures are preliminary and based on Volvo’s own calculations using EPA testing cycles. Official EPA-certified range estimates have not yet been released. Charging times are based on testing at 400 kW charging facilities and can vary with temperature and battery condition.

Torslanda Upgraded for Next-Generation Electrics

The Torslanda plant underwent a significant upgrade program ahead of EX60 production, backed by approximately SEK 10 billion (about $1.09 billion) in investment. The program introduced mega casting capabilities, a new battery assembly facility, a refurbished paint shop, and an overhauled final assembly line. Volvo has described the investment as preparation for production of next-generation electric vehicles beyond the EX60.
