Walmart’s InHome associates, trained to deliver groceries directly into customers’ homes, collaborated with GM to evaluate the performance of BrightDrop 400 vans in real-world settings, including urban driving and customer deliveries. The trial demonstrated that the BrightDrop vans were well-suited for city environments and demanding delivery schedules.
The associates highlighted several notable features from the pilot program:
- The 360-degree HD Surround Vision camera and blind-zone steering assist enhanced driver safety.
- The automation features, like auto-closing doors, significantly boosted delivery efficiency.
- The low-step ergonomic design made getting in and out of the van much easier, supporting fast and efficient deliveries.
“Our BrightDrop vans are purpose-built to get the job done safely and efficiently while helping businesses like Walmart decarbonize their fleet,” said Sandor Piszar, vice president, GM Envolve. “The pilot program demonstrates that at the forefront of our design are the hard-working drivers that deliver goods and services to customers every day.”
Walmart’s expanded use of the BrightDrop vans includes deployment in cities such as Austin, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, northwest Arkansas, Orlando, and the San Francisco Bay area by the end of the year. The expansion aligns with Walmart’s commitment to being people-led and tech-powered, as highlighted by Warren Moore, vice president of Dedicated Delivery for Walmart U.S. Moore emphasized the positive feedback from associates during the pilot, underscoring the improved delivery experience and operational efficiency.
BrightDrop electric vans, produced at the CAMI Assembly plant, are equipped with advanced safety features to ensure driver alertness, low step-in height for easier ingress and egress, and large infotainment screens to provide a tech-enabled driving experience.
