How U.S. News Determined the Winners
The U.S. News Best Hybrid and Electric Car Awards use an objective evaluation process that combines U.S. News Best Car Rankings scores with EPA fuel economy, range, and energy-use data, pricing, and automotive media consensus. The 2026 program expanded its category structure to better differentiate vehicles across size and price segments.
John Vincent, senior editor for vehicle testing at U.S. News, said: “The redesigned 2026 Nissan Leaf, our winner as the Best Subcompact Electric SUV, demonstrates that affordable doesn’t need to be basic or limiting. The Leaf offers a great balance of range and features, at a price that’s within reach of many SUV buyers.”
Range, Charging, and Starting Price
Nissan reports an EPA-estimated range of up to 303 miles per charge for the 2026 LEAF, based on combined city and highway driving. The company lists fuel economy equivalents of 131 MPGe city and 111 MPGe highway for the 75 kWh S+ configuration.
The LEAF integrates a factory-installed NACS port with Plug & Charge capability, which Nissan says opens access to more than 27,500 Tesla Superchargers. Plug & Charge requires a subscription and activation through the MyNISSAN app.
Starting MSRP for the S+ grade is $29,990, a figure Nissan notes is lower than the original 2011 LEAF. The price excludes destination and handling charges, tax, title, license, and options.
Third-Generation Design and Technology
The third-generation LEAF moves away from its hatchback heritage to a crossover silhouette with an SUV-like stance. Exterior features include flush door handles and 3D holographic tail lamps. Available equipment includes a dimming panoramic roof, 64-color ambient interior lighting, and dual 14.3-inch displays with Google built-in, including Google Maps.
Nissan describes the Intelligent Around View Monitor as class-exclusive in the compact electric SUV segment, based on AutoPacific segmentation data covering current in-market competitors.
