ABB E-mobility and MAN Truck & Bus have showcased the first public demonstration of the Megawatt Charging System (MCS) on an electric truck, achieving more than 700 kW and 1,000 A of charging power. This milestone event marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of electric transportation, particularly for the commercial sector, highlighting the collaborative effort between the two companies at MAN’s development center in Munich.

Key Highlights:

  • Innovative Charging Technology: The MCS enables rapid charging, with the MAN eTruck’s battery going from 10% to 80% in approximately 30 minutes.
  • Extended Range: MCS charging can extend the eTruck’s range by about 300 to 400 km during the legally required driving break, enhancing its viability for long-distance transport.
  • Collaborative Development: The successful demonstration is the result of a partnership between ABB E-mobility and MAN, showcasing a prototype that promises to significantly improve future charging capabilities.

Dr. Markus Söder, Bavarian Minister President, emphasized the ecological and economical benefits of this advancement, positioning Bavaria as a leader in the future of mobility. “Bavaria on the way to the mobility of the future: today, the starting signal was given for the first megawatt charging station for electric trucks at MAN in Munich.”

The MCS charging system represents an essential component of the shift towards more sustainable and climate-friendly commercial mobility. It complements existing charging solutions, such as depot charging, and is a testament to the industry’s commitment to overcoming the challenges associated with the electrification of buses and trucks.

Michael Halbherr, CEO of ABB E-mobility, and Alexander Vlaskamp, CEO of MAN Truck & Bus, both highlighted the significance of this technology in facilitating sustainable long-distance transport. They called for accelerated efforts in expanding the charging infrastructure to meet the growing demand for electric commercial vehicles.

Significance for the Future:

The MCS standard is set to redefine the capabilities of electric charging, with potentials reaching up to 3.75 MW at 3,000 A. This development not only promises to enhance the efficiency of electric trucks and buses but also signifies a major leap forward in the industry’s efforts to achieve a transition to CO2-free driving.

The implementation of such high-power charging technology underscores the necessity for robust infrastructure, including grid expansion and digitalization, to support the high energy demands of MCS charging.

As electric mobility continues to evolve, the collaboration between ABB E-mobility and MAN, along with the support from political leaders, highlights a collective drive towards a more sustainable and efficient transportation ecosystem.
