Partnership aims to lower emissions and enhance fleet efficiency
Range Energy (Range), a leader in electric-powered trailers, has announced a strategic partnership with ZF, a global technology supplier, to accelerate the development and deployment of the Range eTrailer System across North America. This collaboration integrates ZF’s AxTrax 2 e-axle into Range’s platform, addressing key fleet challenges such as efficiency improvements, emissions reductions, and extended vehicle range. The goal is to scale hybrid and zero-emission trucking solutions for commercial fleets.
Key Highlights:
- Range’s eTrailer System will incorporate ZF’s AxTrax 2 e-axle to boost efficiency and sustainability.
- Fleet operators could save up to $20,000 per trailer annually while reducing emissions by up to 70%.
- ZF will support Range in expanding relationships with key OEMs and component suppliers to accelerate adoption.
- AxTrax 2 e-axle integrates with braking, ADAS, and automated driving systems, improving vehicle safety and performance.
- Initial customer deliveries of the eTrailer System are expected this year, with pre-production units already in pilot programs.
A Scalable Solution for Commercial Fleets
“Electrified trailers offer a viable solution for reducing emissions in commercial trucking, improving fuel efficiency for combustion-powered vehicles, and extending the range of battery-electric and hybrid trucks,” said John Hawkins, Senior VP of Commercial Vehicle Solutions at ZF. “Collaborating with Range Energy enables us to bring our AxTrax 2 e-axle to the North American market and expand electric mobility applications in the commercial vehicle sector.”
ZF is a global leader in next-generation mobility solutions, helping extend the range of electric vehicles worldwide. Beyond providing its electric axle technology, ZF will facilitate Range’s connections with key industry stakeholders, including trailer and tractor OEMs, to drive further adoption.
The Future of eTrailers
Range’s eTrailer System features a modular battery pack, the ZF AxTrax 2 e-axle, and a smart kingpin with proprietary control algorithms to maximize efficiency. The AxTrax 2 e-axle is designed for seamless integration with braking, advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), and automated driving technologies. It also supports digital and telematics connectivity, allowing fleets to monitor and optimize performance in real time.
“Time is critical for fleet operators seeking emission-reduction solutions while maintaining efficiency,” said Ali Javidan, CEO and founder of Range Energy. “Partnering with a market leader like ZF allows us to scale our platform rapidly and demonstrate the significant role electric-powered trailers can play in reducing the environmental impact of commercial trucking.”
