MAN & ABB Team Up for E-Truck Charging Future

At CES 2024, MAN Truck & Bus and ABB E-mobility announced an R&D collaboration to accelerate the future of electric heavy-duty vehicle charging. This strategic partnership focuses on developing megawatt charging systems (MCS) and addressing the unique needs of logistics customers.

Charging in the Megawatt League:

The key driver of this partnership is the development of MCS technology, enabling charging capacities exceeding one megawatt for long-distance trucks and buses. “MCS represents a paradigm shift in electromobility, requiring collaboration across the entire industry,” emphasizes Thomas Nickels, Senior Vice President Engineering at MAN. “Together with ABB E-mobility, we’re tackling these challenges head-on, accelerating standardization and ensuring reliable technology for our customers.”

Early Collaboration, Early Wins:

This initial three-year agreement goes beyond just internal development. Both companies prioritize the customer experience, conducting early software and interoperability tests to ensure seamless vehicle-to-charging station interactions. This focus on early collaboration creates a foundation for rapid product development and market adoption.

Partners in Innovation:

“High performance, reliability, and customer confidence are critical for electromobility success,” says Floris van de Klashorst, Senior Vice President Products & Hardware Platforms at ABB E-mobility. “By working with MAN from the get-go, we’ll deliver solutions that meet the specific demands of logistics operators, with a first product targeted for 2025.”

Beyond Logistics: A Broader E-Mobility Ecosystem:

The partnership’s scope extends beyond logistics, envisioning MCS applications in other sectors like motorhomes and coaches. Recognizing the unique challenges and user behaviors in these segments, both companies are committed to developing adaptable and sustainable solutions.

This collaboration marks a significant step towards a future where heavy-duty electric vehicles seamlessly integrate into our transportation network. By combining MAN’s expertise in commercial vehicles with ABB’s leadership in EV charging technology, the partnership paves the way for a cleaner, more efficient, and electrified future for all.
