About:Energy’s new facility is the most centrally located battery testing lab in London, intended to serve as a central hub for the company’s UK and European clients while attracting top talent. The ~3,000ft² site features comprehensive testing capabilities, including battery teardown parameterization and cell testing up to 1,000A. The lab will support industries such as automotive, aerospace, and aviation, helping them gather essential data and insights to develop battery products more efficiently.
The testing facility aims to accelerate the adoption of advanced battery technologies like solid-state, sodium-ion, and Lithium iron Manganese Phosphate (LFMP) by providing the crucial data needed for these batteries’ application in various industries. By offering these services, About:Energy helps companies cut down on costs and development timelines, eliminating the need for expensive in-house battery testing.
About:Energy’s software platform, The Voltt, plays a vital role in this process by providing direct access to advanced battery intelligence and digital models. The Voltt offers a range of simulation products that provide insights into thermal, electrical, and degradation properties of batteries, enabling more informed decisions regarding battery packs, battery management systems, and warranties.
According to Gavin White, co-founder and CEO of About:Energy, “We are delighted to open our new battery testing facility, which will allow us to scale our battery testing capabilities and drive innovation across multiple industries. We want to build a new standard for the UK’s battery technology landscape, and this new facility is part of a long-term, multi-million-pound investment strategy over the next five years to support R&D and the commercialization of leading battery measurement technologies.”
The new facility is home to About:Energy’s experienced team, which includes experts with backgrounds at leading organizations like Rolls Royce, Mercedes High Performance Powertrains, Aston Martin, and leading academic institutions such as Imperial College London and the University of Birmingham. To minimize its environmental impact, the facility incorporates sustainable practices such as using waste glass for whiteboards and sourcing all furniture second-hand.
This announcement aligns with About:Energy’s broader mission to strengthen the UK’s battery ecosystem and follows the recent news of securing £1 million in government funding for battery development.
