ACCIONA Energía has launched a groundbreaking initiative by activating the first vehicle-to-grid (V2G) charging stations for IKEA’s electric vehicle fleet in Spain. These advanced chargers, installed at IKEA stores in A Coruña, Badalona, and Alcorcón, mark a significant step in sustainable mobility. The project, part of a broader partnership between ACCIONA Energía and IKEA, introduces three V2G stations, a global first for the Swedish retailer. This technology allows electric vehicles to not only draw power but also return it to the grid, supporting IKEA’s goal to decarbonize its logistics. ACCIONA Energía will manage the stations’ operations, maintenance, and supply of 100% renewable energy, funded partly by the European Union’s NextGenerationEU program.

Key Highlights

  • Innovative V2G Technology: The chargers enable two-way energy flow, allowing IKEA’s electric vehicles to store energy and supply it back to the grid or other systems during peak demand.
  • Sustainability Milestone: These are the first V2G stations worldwide for IKEA, exclusively supporting its electric fleet as part of its decarbonization strategy.
  • Energy Efficiency: Vehicles charge during low-demand periods and return energy during high-demand times, enhancing grid stability and potentially reducing costs.
  • Comprehensive Partnership: ACCIONA Energía oversees installation, maintenance, and customer service while providing certified renewable energy.

This collaboration builds on IKEA’s ongoing efforts to electrify its operations, including adding charging points for customers and staff at its stores. The V2G system optimizes energy use by charging vehicles when electricity is cheaper and redistributing it during peak hours, benefiting both the environment and the electrical grid.

ACCIONA Energía, a key player in Spain’s urban mobility sector since 2021, continues to expand the nation’s charging infrastructure. This project aligns with its mission to promote sustainable energy solutions. For more details, visit ACCIONA Energía’s website. With EU support, this initiative sets a precedent for future eco-friendly innovations in retail logistics.
