Actemium UK Delivers Two New IONITY Ultra-Rapid EV Charging Hubs in Scotland

Actemium UK has commissioned two new IONITY ultra-rapid EV charging hubs in Glasgow and Fort William, including IONITY's 700th UK charger and a key Scottish Highlands site on the A82.

Actemium UK has commissioned two new ultra-rapid EV charging hubs for IONITY in Glasgow and Fort William, including the operator’s 700th ultra-rapid charging point in the UK and only the second public 350kW+ charging hub in the Scottish Highlands. Together, the hubs strengthen high-power coverage for both urban EV drivers and motorists traveling longer distances along key tourism and transport routes.

Highlights

  • Glasgow’s DoubleTree by Hilton Strathclyde site features six Alpitronic HYC 400 chargers serving up to 12 vehicles simultaneously
  • Fort William hub on the A82 includes three Alpitronic HYC 400 chargers powering six bays at 350kW+
  • Actemium UK and IONITY have deployed more than 160 high-power charging points across the UK since 2023
  • IONITY now operates roughly one-third of all public 350kW+ chargers in the UK

Glasgow Hub Marks City’s Third Ultra-Rapid Site

The Glasgow hub, located at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Strathclyde, is Actemium UK’s first IONITY project in the city. It is also only the third public charging hub in the area capable of delivering 350kW+ speeds. The fully operational site features six Alpitronic HYC 400 chargers, capable of powering up to 12 vehicles at once.

Fort William Site Anchors Highlands Coverage

The Fort William hub sits just off the A82, one of Scotland’s principal transport and tourism corridors through the Highlands. The installation includes three Alpitronic HYC 400 chargers feeding six EV charging bays, all rated for simultaneous 350kW+ delivery.

Construction at Fort William required complex groundworks, including drilling through rock formations and installing 20-metre-deep earth electrodes. Both projects were completed with what the companies describe as user-friendly layouts and minimal disruption to surrounding areas.

Scope of Work

Acting as principal contractor across both sites, Actemium UK delivered all civil engineering works, low-voltage electrical installation, testing, commissioning, and final handover. The Fort William scheme also incorporated design responsibilities.

Partnership and Network Context

The two new hubs continue a deployment partnership that has produced more than 160 high-power charging points across the UK since 2023. IONITY’s UK network has more than doubled in less than a year, and the operator now accounts for roughly one-third of all public ultra-rapid (350kW+) charging points in the country.

Grant Murray, Rollout Manager at IONITY, said: “These two new Scottish hubs are important additions to IONITY’s expanding network in the UK, which has doubled the number of ultra-rapid chargers in less than a year.

“We value our partnership with Actemium UK, which continues to deliver the high-quality, turnkey e-mobility infrastructure we need to expand access to ultra-rapid charging across the UK – strengthening driver confidence and supporting more-sustainable long-distance travel.”

Ross Jones, Business Unit General Manager at Actemium E-Mobility, said: “We’re proud of the strong partnership we’ve built with the IONITY team, which continues to go from strength to strength as demand for high-power charging expands.

“With more than 15 years’ experience delivering e-mobility infrastructure, Actemium UK is one of the UK’s longest established deployment partners in the sector. Our substantial electrical engineering expertise underpins our ability to successfully deliver these turnkey projects – from feasibility and design through to civil construction, high- and low-voltage grid connections up to 33kV, installation, testing, commissioning, and ongoing maintenance.”

The Alpitronic HYC 400 charger used at both Scottish sites was the first 400kW EV fast charger to receive UL Solutions certification in Europe. IONITY’s broader UK rollout is backed by a €600 million financing package secured to expand the operator’s network across 24 European countries.
