Acura has confirmed the fourth-generation RDX will feature the brand’s first two-motor hybrid-electric system. The compact SUV is slated for market introduction within the next two years. Production of the current 2026 RDX at East Liberty Auto Plant in Ohio will be suspended later this year in preparation for the transition.
Highlights
- Fourth-generation RDX will be Acura’s first model equipped with a two-motor hybrid-electric powertrain
- Production pause for the 2026 RDX planned later this year ahead of hybrid model launch
- Market timing targets dealer arrival within the next two years
- Cumulative sales of approximately 850,000 RDX units in North America over 20 years
Strategic Context
The hybrid RDX represents Acura’s strategy to offer gas-powered, hybrid, and EV models across its lineup. The announcement coincides with Acura’s 40th anniversary and positions the RDX as a key vehicle in the brand’s electrification roadmap.
Mike Langel, assistant vice president of Acura National Sales, stated the RDX has been among Acura’s most popular models for nearly two decades, making it a logical choice for the brand’s first hybrid-electric application.
RDX Model History
The RDX has served as a cornerstone of Acura’s SUV portfolio since 2007.
First Generation (2007)
The original RDX marked Acura’s entry into the compact premium SUV segment. It featured the company’s first turbocharged engine in North America and introduced Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD).
Second Generation (2013)
The 2013 redesign replaced the turbocharged four-cylinder with a V6 engine and emphasized ride comfort alongside interior refinement.
Third Generation (2019)
The current generation returned to turbocharged power, added the latest SH-AWD technology, and introduced AcuraWatch driver assistance along with the True Touchpad Interface.
Current Acura Lineup
Acura’s current portfolio includes the Integra sedan and ADX, RDX, and MDX SUVs. The all-electric RSX is scheduled to join the lineup in 2026. More than 85% of Acura vehicles sold in America in 2025 were domestically produced.
