Audi Begins A2 e-tron Production in Ingolstadt

Audi has started A2 e-tron production in Ingolstadt, cutting development time by 21 months, reducing part numbers, reusing 1,200 components, and adding fully automated wheel installation and cloud-controlled assembly.

Audi has started production of the fully electric A2 e-tron at its Ingolstadt plant, with a development-to-production-readiness cycle the company says ran 21 months shorter than previous vehicle projects. The first units rolled off the line this week in the presence of Bavarian Minister-President Markus Söder, according to Audi’s production announcement. The launch follows the A2 e-tron lineup and pricing details released after the model’s world premiere in Paris, with German orders opening September 10, 2026. Audi is framing the launch as a demonstration of its own manufacturing transformation: fewer variants, more automation, and continued use of existing equipment.

How Did Audi Shorten A2 e-tron Development Time?

Audi attributes the shorter timeline to experience carried over from earlier vehicle projects and to streamlined processes that reduce coordination effort. The company says this allowed the vehicle to reach maturity earlier during pre-series production.

The A2 e-tron also carries significantly fewer production-relevant part numbers than prior models, which Audi says reduces the number of logistics “supermarkets” inside the plant. The result, per the release, is less floor space devoted to logistics and simpler material supply.

String-of-Pearls Production Comes to Ingolstadt

For the first time at Ingolstadt, Audi is applying the string-of-pearls production principle already in use at its Neckarsulm plant. Under this approach, the sequence of customer orders is locked six days before assembly begins and then held across all production areas.

Audi cites two main benefits. A fixed sequence lets suppliers build parts in the correct order and pack them in the designated container, cutting process complexity. Storage and sequencing areas are eliminated, which the company says improves the cost-effectiveness of the overall process. Ingolstadt had confirmed a fall 2026 A2 e-tron start earlier this year as the plant ended Q2 output.

Body Shop Shared With the A3

Audi builds A2 e-tron bodies alongside those of the Audi A3, a setup the company credits to the flexible layout of its facilities. More than 1,200 production components — including robot welding guns and roughly 250 robots previously used on other Audi models — have been reused or repurposed for the new line.

Automation Upgrades in Chassis and Body Shop

The A2 e-tron brings fully automated wheel installation to Ingolstadt. Fully automated robot stations replace the previous semi-automated bolting stations in chassis preassembly for both the front and rear axles.

In the body shop, Audi has introduced “bin picking,” which uses image processing and camera-guided robot control to identify and pick up components. According to the company, robots can now remove small sheet-metal parts directly from unsorted containers and feed them to the next production step, reducing ergonomically demanding tasks for workers.

Edge Cloud 4 Production and AI Assistants

Audi’s “Edge Cloud 4 Production” industrial cloud supports the digital networking of assembly. The Universal Test System used to commission A2 e-tron control units and the “operator guidance” system, which displays vehicle customization information, are both controlled centrally from the cloud. Audi says this eliminates more than 450 industrial PCs in assembly.

The company is also rolling out AI-supported knowledge assistants across its production sites. A Supply Chain Chatbot helps employees locate expert knowledge, processes, and documentation, while a maintenance chat tool supports maintenance teams with fault analysis and troubleshooting.

Workforce Qualification

Audi prepared Ingolstadt employees for the fully electric model through a multistage program combining hands-on training with virtual qualification. Traditional practical modules on the assembly line were paired with digital tools such as on-screen virtual assembly training. The company positions the program as strengthening electromobility expertise at the site.
