Allotrope Energy, a UK-based innovator, has unveiled a groundbreaking class of supercapacitors that promise to transform hybrid powertrains. Announced on June 30, 2025, these supercapacitors, powered by the sustainable Lignavolt material, deliver twice the energy density of existing technologies while slashing costs. This breakthrough could redefine energy recovery and power delivery in hybrid-electric vehicles, making them more efficient and accessible.
Key Highlights:
- Double Energy Density: Achieves 14-15 Wh/kg, surpassing traditional supercapacitors’ 7-8 Wh/kg.
- Cost-Effective Design: Offers superior performance at a fraction of the cost of lithium-ion batteries.
- Sustainable Production: Utilizes Lignavolt, a nano-porous carbon derived from pulp industry byproducts.
- Enhanced Hybrid Efficiency: Enables smaller, lighter combustion engines and more powerful electric motors.

Advancing Hybrid Vehicle Technology
Supercapacitors excel at rapid energy storage, making them ideal for regenerative braking systems. Unlike lithium-ion batteries, which struggle with sudden power surges and require bulky, costly packs, Allotrope’s supercapacitors recover energy efficiently in a compact form. A shoebox-sized pack weighing just a few kilos can capture all energy from moderate braking, a feat unattainable by conventional batteries.
Powering Performance and Sustainability
These supercapacitors also deliver power quickly, enabling 75bhp of electrical assistance from a 1kg unit—50 times that of an equivalent lithium-ion battery. This allows hybrid vehicles to rely more on electric motors, reducing the size and emissions of combustion engines. For instance, doubling the power of an average SUV’s engine requires only a 4kg supercapacitor.
Built for Durability and Eco-Friendliness
Allotrope’s supercapacitors are intrinsically stable, requiring no complex thermal management and boasting a lifespan far exceeding batteries. The use of Lignavolt, derived from sustainable pulp industry byproducts, eliminates reliance on rare earth materials, enhancing environmental benefits.
Industry Impact and Future Potential
Allotrope has begun supplying evaluation cells to industry partners, with early results confirming the technology’s potential to revolutionize automotive applications. The company, backed by Suzano Papel e Cellulose since 2022, is poised to lead in advanced battery carbons.
