Cléon’s Role in Electric Innovation
Located in Normandy, France, the Cléon plant is central to Ampere’s industrial strategy, producing high-performance electric motors for Renault Group and other brands. The facility’s latest achievement is the 7DL twin motor, a 250 kW dual motor system (2 x 125 kW) designed for the Alpine A390, Alpine’s second fully electric model in its Dream Garage lineup. This motor powers an all-wheel-drive system with torque vectoring, enabling the A390 to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds, combining sportiness with practicality for five passengers.
The production process for the 7DL motor exemplifies Cléon’s precision. Highly skilled operators handle tasks like screwing, fitting, and engraving with meticulous care, supported by digital traceability and camera-controlled operations. Every powertrain undergoes rigorous testing for vibration, acoustics, and durability, ensuring top-tier quality for Alpine’s performance standards.
Digital Transformation and AI Integration
Since 2017, Cléon has embraced Industry 4.0 principles, earning recognition from the World Economic Forum. The plant leverages artificial intelligence to monitor production parameters, detect deviations, and ensure compliance. A three-year roadmap includes deploying 45 digital solutions to enhance the industrial metaverse, boosting agility and reliability. These advancements position Cléon as a leader in modern manufacturing.
Power Electronics and Competitiveness
To strengthen its role in the EV value chain, Cléon is integrating power electronics assembly, critical for motor performance and EV range. The plant is exploring vertical integration and 40% component compaction to enhance efficiency and competitiveness. These efforts include rethinking supplier relationships to reduce costs and carbon footprints. A new training campus, Reknow University, will equip staff with skills for these advanced processes.
Diversification and Future Growth
Cléon is expanding beyond traditional manufacturing, incorporating activities like aluminum foundry operations and flexible production capabilities. By reusing existing equipment, the plant adapts to new products, including vehicle parts and innovative power electronics processes. With a workforce of 3,146 employees, including 14% women and 165 apprentices, Cléon is poised for continued growth.
Alpine A390: A New Era of Performance
The Alpine A390, set for release in late 2025, embodies Cléon’s engineering prowess. Equipped with the 6AM 160kW motor at the front and the new 7DL twin motor at the rear, it delivers exceptional dynamism. According to Philippe Krief, Alpine’s CEO, the A390 combines French industrial excellence with cutting-edge engineering, promising a unique driving experience and supporting Alpine’s international expansion.
Cléon’s Legacy and Ampere’s Vision
With 101.7 million engines and gearboxes produced since 1958, Cléon remains a cornerstone of Renault Group’s legacy. Its focus on electric and hybrid technologies, producing 1.3 million mechanical components in 2024, underscores its adaptability. Josep Maria Recasens, Ampere’s CEO, highlights Cléon’s role in showcasing French performance across Europe, driven by innovation and team commitment.
Ampere, as Renault Group’s EV division, continues to prioritize sustainable, high-performance vehicles. Cléon’s advancements in motor production, digital transformation, and power electronics align with Ampere’s mission to deliver accessible, cutting-edge EVs with minimal environmental impact.
