GAC launched series production of its AION UT electric hatchback at Magna’s manufacturing facility in Graz, Austria, on March 18, 2026. The milestone marks the Chinese automaker’s first European-assembled vehicle. AION UT is the second model in GAC’s AION lineup to reach the European market, following the AION V electric SUV in 2025.
Highlights
- European production launch: GAC achieved Start of Production (SOP) and first roll-off of the AION UT at Magna’s Austria plant on March 18, 2026.
- Localized design and assembly: The vehicle was designed at GAC’s Milan studio and is assembled in Austria through a contract manufacturing partnership with Magna.
- Key specs: The AION UT offers up to 430 km of WLTP range, a 2,750 mm wheelbase, and 30–80% DC fast charging in 24 minutes.
- Strategic entry model: AION UT serves as GAC’s primary entry point into the European EV market, following the AION V SUV launch in 2025.
Contract Manufacturing With Magna
GAC’s partnership with Magna provides access to established European automotive manufacturing infrastructure. As a result, the arrangement is intended to support production quality, supply chain alignment, and process consistency for the European market.
However, GAC has not disclosed production volume targets or specific European delivery timelines for the AION UT. The company described the model as a “strategic entry model for Europe” focused on long-term market development.
AION UT Technical Overview
The AION UT is a compact electric hatchback built on a 2,750 mm wheelbase. GAC says the platform delivers interior space comparable to a mid-size sedan. Additionally, the vehicle supports DC fast charging from 30% to 80% in 24 minutes.
WLTP-rated range reaches up to 430 km. Meanwhile, specific battery capacity, motor output, and pricing details were not included in the announcement.
Design and Market Positioning
GAC’s European design center in Milan led the AION UT’s styling and usability development. According to GAC, the vehicle was tailored to European preferences in design, driving dynamics, and connected mobility features.
Furthermore, the AION UT follows the AION V electric SUV, which entered the European market in 2025. Together, the two models form the initial foundation of GAC’s European EV portfolio.
