Amsted Automotive is poised to showcase its latest advancements in electric vehicle (EV) technology at the 2024 SAE World Congress Experience (WCX) in Detroit. The event, scheduled for April 16, will feature a detailed presentation on Amsted’s innovative multi-functional one-way clutch shift system designed to enhance EV efficiency and driving range while reducing overall costs and component complexity.

Key Highlights:

  • Presentation Time: April 16, 2024, at 1:30 PM EST.
  • Location: Learning Lab, Huntington Place, Detroit.
  • Speaker: John Jennings, Director of Innovation and eMobility.

This next-generation technology builds on Amsted’s previously developed 2-speed Power-Shift system, which was tailored for electric vehicle architectures. The new system introduces an electro-mechanical One-Way-Clutch, effectively eliminating the drag losses typically seen with traditional wet friction clutches. This design not only enhances system efficiency but also increases reliability, reduces shift times, and simplifies control mechanisms.

By leveraging the precision control of electric motors, this clutching technology allows for precise torque management, crucial for extending the EV’s driving range and improving overall vehicle performance. John Jennings, in his presentation, will outline the specifics of this technology and its benefits over the previous systems.

Comparative Advantages of the New System:

  • Reduced system weight
  • Decreased spatial requirements for components
  • Elimination of the oil circuit and pump for the friction pack
  • Removal of the actuation system for the friction pack
  • Increased efficiency due to absence of friction elements
  • No wear particle contamination, enhancing sustainability
  • Lower production costs

Amsted Automotive has consistently been at the forefront of developing functional and cost-effective solutions for EV propulsion systems, aiming to meet the evolving demands of automakers and consumers alike. The integration of Means Industries Inc., Transform Automotive, SMW Manufacturing, and Burgess-Norton Mfg. Co., Inc. under the Amsted Automotive Group in 2021 has further solidified its capability to offer a wide range of innovative products and efficiency solutions globally.

With a focus on precision and strategic design, Amsted is dedicated to advancing automotive technology to support sustainable and efficient transportation solutions, evident in their latest contribution to EV technology showcased at the WCX.
