ArcBest, a leading logistics company, recently completed a pilot program to evaluate a Class 8 electric semi-truck in real-world freight operations. Conducted through its less-than-truckload carrier, ABF Freight, the initiative tested a Tesla Semi across various routes, showcasing ArcBest’s commitment to innovative logistics and sustainable freight solutions. This pilot marks a significant step in assessing the viability of electric vehicles (EVs) for long-haul transportation, aligning with the company’s focus on operational efficiency and environmental responsibility.
Key Highlights
- Pilot Success: The Tesla Semi logged 4,494 miles over three weeks, averaging 321 miles daily.
- Energy Efficiency: Achieved an impressive 1.55 kWh per mile, demonstrating strong performance.
- Versatile Routes: Operated on over-the-road routes, regional runs, and rail shuttle operations.
- Driver Satisfaction: Operators praised the vehicle’s comfort, safety, and intuitive controls.
- Infrastructure Needs: Highlighted the necessity for expanded charging infrastructure to support broader EV adoption.
The pilot involved operating the Tesla Semi on routes between Reno, Nevada, and Sacramento, California, including a challenging 7,200-foot climb over Donner Pass. The vehicle matched the performance of diesel trucks, offering comparable reliability and efficiency. Drivers noted the center seat configuration, wide visibility, and user-friendly controls as key advantages, enhancing the overall driver experience.
ArcBest’s chief innovation officer, Dennis Anderson, emphasized the role of freight transportation in global emissions and the potential of EVs like the Tesla Semi to drive decarbonization. However, challenges such as charging infrastructure development remain critical for scaling EV use in long-haul operations. ABF Freight president Matt Godfrey highlighted that EVs must meet or exceed the performance and cost-efficiency of diesel trucks to be viable.
This pilot builds on ArcBest’s broader EV integration efforts, including the use of electric yard tractors, forklifts, and Class 6 trucks. The company remains committed to leveraging emerging technologies to reduce emissions and enhance logistics efficiency, delivering value to customers while advancing sustainability.
