Audi Reveals New “Clarity” Design Philosophy

Audi has unveiled its new "clarity" design philosophy, previewed by the Concept C. This focus on radical simplicity will guide future models and reshape the company's products and structures.

Audi is embarking on a new beginning, unveiling a progressive design philosophy that prioritizes clarity and a reduction to the essential. This new direction was showcased with the Audi Concept C study in Milan, offering a definitive preview of the brand’s future models. The strategic shift is part of a fundamental realignment of the company, focusing products, processes, and structures on what is essential to create space for innovation and technological leadership.

Key Highlights

  • Audi has introduced a new design philosophy centered on clarity and “radical simplicity.”
  • The Audi Concept C concept car serves as the first preview of the design language for future models.
  • The company plans to launch more than 20 new models within a 24-month period.
  • CEO Gernot Döllner emphasizes that this philosophy will reshape not just vehicle design but the entire company structure.

A New Philosophy Focused on Clarity

The new approach is defined by a design language that unmistakably embodies the brand’s identity of distinctive design, uncompromising quality, and sophistication. According to Chief Creative Officer Massimo Frascella, “Radical simplicity is at the heart of our approach. We achieve clarity by reducing everything to the essential.” This principle applies to both vehicle exteriors and interiors, where technological innovations and materials are used with precision to create maximal impact with minimal measures.

This design philosophy also focuses on the emotional aspect of a vehicle. Frascella notes the goal is to “shape a brand capable of inspiring desire and creating cultural impact,” moving beyond purely rational experiences to make a car truly desirable.

Audi Concept C Previews Future Design

The Audi Concept C is the first physical manifestation of this new direction. The concept car, which will be shown at IAA in Munich, embodies universal design principles by eliminating superfluous lines and committing to geometric clarity. A key feature is the vertical frame, inspired by the iconic Auto Union Type C racing car, which focuses the viewer’s gaze.

This reduction to the essential is also evident in the interior. The design aims to free users from distractions by providing the right information at the right time through intelligent technology, creating a focused and sophisticated user experience.

Reshaping Every Aspect of the Company

This return to the essential is more than a design strategy; it is a corporate principle that will guide the entire organization. “The way we design our vehicles is the way we will shape our company,” said Audi CEO Gernot Döllner. He added that clarity will serve as the “compass that will guide Audi through the times ahead.”

This initiative is part of the Audi Agenda, a program of profound changes initiated in 2023 to strengthen innovative capabilities and future-proof the business model. Initial successes include a focused portfolio that enables greater investment in quality and innovation, as well as a new business model for China.

Continuing the Model Initiative

Audi’s product offensive is well underway. By the end of this year, the brand will have introduced more than 20 new models within 24 months, creating the youngest portfolio in the premium segment. Following the replacement of core models like the Audi A6 and Audi Q3, the brand will showcase the Q3 Sportback e-hybrid at the IAA.

The initiative will continue next year with additions including a fully electric entry-level model set for production in Ingolstadt from 2026 and new performance models from Audi Sport. This diverse portfolio of all-electric models, plug-in hybrids, and new combustion-engine vehicles will ensure a robust and flexible position in key global markets. The company is also preparing for its entry into Formula 1 in 2026, seeing it as an opportunity to test new technologies in a demanding environment.
