Audi has unveiled its MHEV plus technology, a next-generation hybrid system designed to optimize efficiency, reduce carbon emissions, and enhance performance. Introduced in the new A5 and Q5 models built on the Premium Platform Combustion (PPC), this innovative system integrates advanced components like the powertrain generator (PTG) and a 48-volt mild hybrid architecture. With its ability to enable partially electric driving and improve fuel economy, MHEV plus represents a significant step in Audi’s electrification journey.
Key Highlights
- Advanced Components: The system features a powertrain generator (PTG), belt alternator starter (BAS), and a lithium iron phosphate battery to optimize performance and efficiency.
- 48-Volt Electrical System: Supports the combustion engine by reducing CO2 emissions, enhancing agility, and providing a smoother driving experience.
- Partially Electric Driving: The PTG enables electric boosting and emission-free coasting at speeds up to 140 km/h.
- Energy Efficiency: Regenerative braking recovers up to 25 kW of energy, further enhancing fuel savings.
- Customer-Centric Design: Developed with anticipated customer requirements in mind, the system focuses on increasing driving comfort, agility, and performance.
The powertrain generator (PTG), a compact electric drive module, delivers up to 18 kW (24 PS) of power and 230 Nm of torque at the transmission output. This ensures superior responsiveness and agility, especially during initial acceleration. Additionally, the system’s liquid-cooled architecture maintains optimal operating conditions, ensuring seamless integration with front and all-wheel drivetrains.
Audi’s MHEV plus technology demonstrates how electrification can enhance traditional combustion engine vehicles. By enabling functions like emission-free coasting, regenerative braking, and improved energy management, the system offers a balanced approach to efficiency and performance. While this innovation will not be available in the U.S., it showcases Audi’s commitment to tailored solutions for diverse global markets.
