BMW Group has achieved a notable milestone by producing its three-millionth electrified vehicle at its Munich plant. This vehicle, a BMW 330e Touring in Portimao Blue, is headed to the UK. The accomplishment reflects BMW’s dedication to sustainable transportation and its success in scaling up production to meet rising demand for electric and hybrid vehicles across its global network.
Key Highlights
- Three-millionth electrified vehicle: A BMW 330e Touring in Portimao Blue for the UK.
- Sales trend: In 2024, one in four BMW vehicles sold was fully electric or a plug-in hybrid.
- Production flexibility: Electrified and combustion engine vehicles share the same assembly lines.
- Global reach: All BMW Group plants are equipped for electromobility production.
- Growth in electromobility: Over 25% of 2024 production was electrified, with most being fully electric.
- Delivery milestone: 1.5 million BEVs delivered across BMW, MINI, and Rolls-Royce brands.
- Expansion plans: Full electrification underway in China, with the US and Mexico to follow.
- E-drive capacity: Dingolfing’s Competence Centre hit 500,000 e-drives annually by 2022.
BMW’s electromobility efforts started in 2013 with the BMW i3, a fully electric model built in Leipzig. For nearly a decade, it was produced alongside the BMW i8, the company’s first plug-in hybrid. Initially, the i3 had a dedicated production area, but BMW has since integrated electrified vehicle manufacturing into all its plants. This shift supports a growing production share, with over 25% of 2024’s output being electrified, predominantly fully electric models.
The global production network now seamlessly blends electrified and traditional vehicles. In 2019, the MINI Cooper SE began production in Oxford, followed by the BMW iX3 in China in 2020, and the BMW iX and i4 in 2021 at Dingolfing and Munich. By 2022, all German plants were fully electric-ready. China’s plants are fully electrified, while US and Mexican facilities will add BEVs by 2026 and 2027, respectively. South Africa’s Rosslyn plant joined the effort in 2024.
The Competence Centre in Dingolfing drives this progress, producing over 500,000 e-drives yearly by 2022. Looking forward, BMW plans to launch its sixth-generation e-drives with the NEUE KLASSE in Hungary, reinforcing its leadership in sustainable mobility.
