BMW Group Plant Steyr has been awarded the prestigious INDUSTRIE 4.0 AWARD by ROI-EFESO for its outstanding contributions to digitalization and automation in discrete manufacturing. This accolade was presented during a ceremony in Munich, highlighting the facility’s innovative integration of over 200 digitalization solutions across its operations.
The award-winning BMW Group’s Austrian plant in Steyr specializes in the research and production of electric drives for future vehicles. A significant digital transformation is underway at the plant, preparing for the production of next-generation electric drives. Since introducing its first artificial intelligence (AI) solutions in 2018, Steyr has embraced digital innovation, positioning itself at the forefront of the industry’s evolution.
Central to Steyr’s digital prowess is the InnoLab, a dedicated space for testing and implementing the most effective digital applications in production. The plant boasts approximately 200 digital projects, encompassing a broad spectrum from simple data visualizations to complex AI applications that enhance multiple production lines, including the use of generative AI for component quality control.
Klaus von Moltke, Senior Vice President of Engine Production at BMW AG and Plant Director at Steyr, emphasizes the importance of employee creativity and experience in driving innovation. The plant’s digital solutions, known for their scalability and adaptability, are shared across the BMW iFACTORY network, promoting efficiency and flexibility in production processes.
Employee training plays a critical role in Steyr’s transformation, with initiatives designed to enhance digital literacy and encourage innovation among the workforce. The upcoming Snapp-a-thon event exemplifies this approach, teaching employees without programming backgrounds to develop apps that streamline their work processes.
