The BMW Group is pushing the boundaries of electric vehicle (EV) technology by integrating all-solid-state battery (ASSB) cells from Solid Power into a BMW i7 test vehicle in Munich. This collaboration marks a significant step toward developing batteries with higher energy density and longer ranges, offering a compact and lightweight alternative to current technologies.
Key Highlights
- Advanced ASSB Technology: Promises greater energy density for extended EV range.
- BMW i7 Test Vehicle: Features Solid Power’s large-format ASSB cells in real-world testing.
- Long-Term Partnership: BMW and Solid Power have collaborated since 2016, with deepened ties in 2022.
- Innovative Design: Combines proven Gen5 prismatic cells with new module concepts.
- Research Focus: Examines cell expansion, operating pressure, and temperature control.

Collaborative Innovation
Since 2016, BMW and Solid Power have worked together under a Joint Development Agreement, bolstered by BMW’s investment in Solid Power in 2021. Their partnership intensified in 2022 with a technology transfer agreement, enabling BMW to operate a solid cell prototype line at its Cell Manufacturing Competence Center (CMCC) in Parsdorf. This facility leverages Solid Power’s expertise and sulfide-based electrolyte technology to refine ASSB cells.
Testing and Development
The BMW i7 test vehicle showcases a battery pack that integrates Solid Power’s innovative cells, developed collaboratively with BMW experts. These cells aim to balance compact design with high performance, addressing challenges like cell expansion and temperature regulation. John Van Scoter, CEO of Solid Power, emphasized the milestone, stating, “This is the first demonstration of truly all-solid-state battery cells in a vehicle.” Martin Schuster, BMW’s Vice President of Battery Cell and Cell Module, highlighted the company’s technology-open mindset, underscoring the value of partnerships in advancing battery innovation.

BMW’s Battery Strategy
BMW’s Battery Cell Competence Center (BCCC) in Munich, operational since 2019, drives these efforts by covering the entire battery value chain. With a network of 300 partners, including startups and universities, BMW ensures access to cutting-edge research. This strategic approach positions the company to deliver competitive, sustainable EV solutions in the future.
