On April 21, 2025, BMW captivated audiences at Auto Shanghai 2025 with the debut of the BMW Vision Driving Experience (VDX), a high-performance test vehicle showcasing unparalleled driving dynamics. Unveiled two days before the world’s largest motor show, the VDX, based on the BMW Vision Neue Klasse, demonstrated spectacular maneuvers, powered by the innovative Heart of Joy central computer. This prototype, designed to push the boundaries of physics, highlighted BMW’s commitment to advancing electric vehicle performance.

- Heart of Joy Computer: Centralizes driving dynamics, enhancing precision and agility.
- Unprecedented Torque: Delivers up to 18,000 Nm, creating a Formula 1-like experience.
- Active Aerodynamics: Generates 1.2 tonnes of downforce and 3g lateral forces.
- Brake Energy Regeneration: Achieves 98% braking efficiency, a 25% improvement.
- Luminescent Paint: Features innovative, self-illuminating paint for a striking visual effect.
The VDX, described as the “most powerful prototype” BMW has ever built, was showcased during the BMW Brand Night by test drivers Jens Klingmann and Elias Houndtonji. Jochen Goller, a BMW AG Board Member, emphasized the vehicle’s ability to convert electric power into controlled driving pleasure, earning enthusiastic audience feedback. The Heart of Joy, paired with BMW Dynamic Performance Control software, ensures superior handling, making it the “fastest test rig in the world.” This technology will be standard in all Neue Klasse vehicles, set to begin production in Debrecen, Hungary, by year-end.
The VDX’s exterior, inspired by the Neue Klasse’s purist design, features a monolithic body, powerful wheel arches, and a “shark nose” front. For Shanghai, BMW applied a self-illuminating paint that shifts from whitish yellow to neon yellow, complemented by a “magic film” creating a vibrant color gradient. While not intended for production, the VDX serves as a rigorous testbed, ensuring future BMW models deliver exceptional performance and efficiency.
