BorgWarner has secured two new conquest program awards in Asia covering a latest-generation wet dual clutch for a Chinese OEM’s SUV platform and a torsional assist variable cam timing (VCT) system for a Japanese OEM’s next-generation hybrid engine. The supplier announced the wins from its Auburn Hills, Michigan headquarters on May 6, 2026, the same day it reported first-quarter 2026 results that listed the two contracts among the period’s new business. SUV dual clutch production is planned for the second half of 2026, with the Japanese hybrid VCT program slated for 2028. Neither the Chinese OEM nor the Japanese OEM was named.
Highlights
- Wet dual clutch awarded for a Chinese OEM SUV platform, with start of production planned for the second half of 2026
- Torsional assist VCT system awarded for a Japanese OEM next-generation hybrid engine, with production beginning in 2028
- Both wins were disclosed alongside BorgWarner’s Q1 2026 results showing organic net sales down approximately 4.2% year over year
- Awards extend a string of Asia conquest wins that included three eMotor contracts in China and South Korea announced one week earlier
Wet Dual Clutch Targets Drag Reduction in Chinese SUV Platform
The Chinese SUV award covers BorgWarner’s latest-generation wet dual clutch, which combines wet friction materials with a revised groove design intended to reduce drag torque and improve transmission efficiency. The company said the clutch delivers stable friction behavior at lower actuation pressure, supporting smoother launch and shift performance. A newly integrated wave spring is positioned as a robustness and cost feature.
Start of production is planned for the second half of 2026. BorgWarner did not disclose the customer, vehicle nameplate, transmission gear count, or torque capacity. The award follows a similar pattern to BorgWarner’s May 6, 2025 announcement of two dual-clutch programs with a Chinese transmission manufacturer and a German OEM operating in China — the exact same disclosure date one year apart, suggesting a recurring cadence of dual-clutch wins tied to the Shanghai Auto Show period.
How the New Clutch Fits BorgWarner’s DCT Lineup
BorgWarner’s DualTronic dual clutch family produces more than 800,000 units annually and remains the company’s flagship transmission product line. The latest-generation module described in the announcement is positioned as an evolution of that platform, with cost competitiveness flagged as a deliberate engineering target — a notable framing in a Chinese passenger vehicle market where local transmission suppliers have intensified price pressure on global tier-one suppliers.
Torsional Assist VCT System Tuned for Hybrid Engine Response
The Japanese award covers a center-bolt torsional assist (TA) VCT system for a next-generation hybrid engine. Compared with conventional oil-pressure-actuated VCT architectures, BorgWarner said the TA design uses shorter and simpler internal oil passages, which it claims enables faster cam phasing response and stronger lock-pin engagement.
Those characteristics matter more in hybrid applications than in pure combustion engines. Hybrid powertrains demand frequent engine start-stop events and rapid load transitions as the electric motor takes over and hands back propulsion duties, and faster cam phasing helps the engine reach efficient operating conditions in less time after each restart. Production for the Japanese OEM program is planned to begin in 2028. BorgWarner said it is supporting the customer from technical concept through production implementation as the OEM upgrades its VCT architecture.
Executive Comment
“These new conquest awards reflect BorgWarner’s continued commitment to advancing efficient and competitive propulsion solutions across both transmission and VCT technologies,” said Isabelle McKenzie, Vice President of BorgWarner Inc. and President and General Manager, Drivetrain and Morse Systems. “They further demonstrate the resilience and growth potential of our propulsion business in Asia, as customers continue to value high-performance, cost-competitive solutions for both combustion and hybrid powertrains.”
Context: Asia as the Active Front for BorgWarner Propulsion Wins
The two awards extend a run of Asia-focused conquest announcements. On April 30, 2026, BorgWarner disclosed three eMotor awards spanning a B-segment EV stator assembly in South Korea and two hybrid motor programs in China. The combustion and hybrid powertrain wins announced today sit on the foundational side of BorgWarner’s portfolio, while the eMotor contracts sit on the eProduct side — together illustrating a strategy of pursuing content gains across both halves of the business as Asian OEMs scale next-generation hybrid platforms alongside battery-electric programs.
