Rivian Begins R2 Customer Deliveries, Opens Reservation Orders

Rivian has begun first public deliveries of the R2 mid-size electric SUV, starting with the Performance Launch Package from $57,990, and opened ordering to existing reservation holders on a rolling basis.

Rivian has begun its first public customer deliveries of the R2, the mid-size electric SUV it built to reach a significantly broader audience, starting with the R2 Performance with Launch Package priced from $57,990. The company also opened ordering to existing reservation holders, extending purchase invitations on a rolling basis. First unveiled in March 2024 in Laguna Beach, California, the R2 reaches buyers after testing and validation across some of the most demanding climates and terrain in North America. Production runs on a dedicated new line at Rivian’s Normal, Illinois facility, where employees began taking delivery in April.

Highlights

  • Deliveries begin with the R2 Performance with Launch Package, priced from $57,990, with R2 Premium configurations to follow in late 2026 and multiple R2 Standard configurations through 2027.
  • The R2 rides on an all-new mid-size platform and is nearly 2,000 lbs lighter than the R1, on a 115.6-inch wheelbase, with 9.6 inches of ground clearance, a 25° approach angle and a 26° departure angle.
  • The interior offers 40.9 inches of front headroom, 40.4 inches of rear legroom, a 40/20/40 folding rear seat, and 90.1 cubic feet of total storage with the seats folded.
  • Rivian is inviting existing reservation holders to order on a rolling basis, following an initial wave of employee deliveries that started in April.

A New Mid-Size Platform

The R2 is built on an all-new mid-size platform engineered for a more accessible price point without sacrificing capability. At nearly 2,000 pounds lighter than the R1 and sitting on a shorter 115.6-inch wheelbase, the SUV is positioned as responsive and maneuverable in urban settings while keeping Rivian’s off-road character. Ground clearance measures 9.6 inches, which the company describes as class-leading, paired with a 25-degree approach angle and a 26-degree departure angle.

Interior Space and Storage

Inside, the R2 offers 40.9 inches of front headroom and 40.4 inches of rear legroom, along with a 40/20/40 folding rear seat designed to carry long items such as skis or lumber. Total storage reaches 90.1 cubic feet with the seats folded, spanning the front trunk to the rear cargo area — enough, Rivian says, for up to five large suitcases, three backpacks, a stroller and more.

Pricing and Trim Rollout

Deliveries open with the R2 Performance with Launch Package, starting at $57,990. R2 Premium configurations are scheduled to follow in late 2026, with multiple R2 Standard configurations arriving through 2027.

Ordering for Reservation Holders

Alongside the first deliveries, Rivian began inviting existing R2 reservation holders to place firm orders, sending invitations on a rolling basis. The move converts a long reservation list — built since the model’s 2024 reveal — into the first wave of configured customer orders.

Manufacturing in Normal, Illinois

The R2 comes to life on an all-new, dedicated line at Rivian’s Normal, Illinois plant, the same facility that builds the R1S and R1T. Rivian says the R2 program supports thousands of jobs in Central Illinois and marks the next chapter of its growing U.S. manufacturing footprint. “I am really proud of the work our team poured into creating R2,” said RJ Scaringe, Rivian’s founder and CEO.
