bp pulse, the electric vehicle (EV) charging sector of bp, has taken a significant step towards enhancing the infrastructure for Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) in Europe by acquiring Ashford International Truckstop in Kent. This move is poised to revolutionize the support system for HGV fleets transitioning to electric vehicles (EVs), given the truck stop’s strategic location near Dover and the Eurotunnel.
Key Highlights:
- Strategic Location: Ashford’s proximity to major crossings at Dover and the Eurotunnel makes it an ideal site for supporting the electrification of HGVs.
- Comprehensive Charging Options: Plans include the installation of 20 mega-watt chargers and additional units for various charging needs.
- Projected Impact: The introduction of mega-watt chargers by 2026 aims to facilitate fast and efficient charging for HGVs.
The acquisition targets the heart of the logistical flow between the UK and mainland Europe, with approximately 3.5 million HGVs crossing annually. This places bp pulse at the forefront of aiding the transition towards more sustainable, electric-powered freight transportation.
The Ashford site, currently hosting 660 parking bays, will see the introduction of mega-watt chargers capable of significantly reducing charging times for HGVs, thereby promoting the adoption of EVs among fleet operators. This initiative is part of bp’s broader strategy to develop a network of mobility hubs across the UK and Europe, offering a mix of energy solutions to support the decarbonization of road transportation.
“For fleet operators to consider going electric, they must be confident that the infrastructure is in place to support them,” remarked Stefan von Dobschuetz, General Manager of bp pulse Europe, underscoring the importance of building a reliable EV charging infrastructure.
The partnership between bp pulse and the GSE Group, the current owners of Ashford International Truckstop, highlights a shared vision for accelerating the shift to electric freight vehicles. This collaboration is expected to leverage GSE Group’s operational expertise and bp pulse’s capabilities in EV charging infrastructure to create a model facility for electric HGVs.
As bp pulse works towards connecting its new UK site with its existing EV charging corridors in Germany, the initiative represents a significant milestone in the company’s commitment to environmental sustainability and innovation in energy solutions. This strategic acquisition not only reinforces bp’s investment in the transition to lower carbon energy but also showcases its dedication to supporting fleet customers throughout their decarbonization journey.
