What Makes the DOLPHIN G DM-i Different in the Supermini Class

BYD describes the DOLPHIN G DM-i as the only supermini to feature its plug-in Super Hybrid with DM technology, paired with what the company calls meaningful pure-electric range. The company has not yet released figures for EV-only range, battery capacity, motor output, or pricing.

The Super Hybrid with DM (Dual Mode) architecture, already used in BYD’s European PHEV models including the ATTO 2 DM-i compact SUV and the SEAL U DM-i, prioritises electric driving and uses the combustion engine primarily to extend range on longer journeys. In the DOLPHIN G DM-i, BYD says acceleration comes from a front-mounted electric motor, with the hybrid system intelligently engaged when longer trips demand it.

A European-Designed B-Segment Hatchback

The DOLPHIN G DM-i represents a shift in BYD’s European product strategy. Previous European launches, including the SEAL U DM-i — BYD’s first plug-in hybrid in Europe — were adapted from Chinese-market vehicles. The DOLPHIN G DM-i is the first model BYD has developed from the outset for overseas markets, with its B-segment positioning targeted at one of the largest vehicle classes on the continent.

The supermini class has historically been dominated by petrol superminis and full-hybrid alternatives such as the Toyota Yaris and Renault Clio. By introducing a plug-in option at this size, BYD is positioning the DOLPHIN G DM-i against full-hybrid rivals rather than other PHEVs, which typically sit in larger segments.

Stella Li on the European Strategy

BYD Executive Vice President Stella Li framed the launch as a market-redefining move:

“The European B-segment is one of the most important parts of the market, and with DOLPHIN G DM-i, we want to redefine what customers can expect from a compact car in the electric era. By bringing long electric range, intelligent hybrid technology and advanced digital features into an accessible compact vehicle, we are making sustainable mobility smarter, more practical and available to many more people across Europe.”

Launch Timing and Next Disclosures

A full launch is scheduled for June, with the first customer deliveries expected by the end of summer. BYD has said full equipment levels and technical specifications will follow in due course.
