BYD, the global leader in new-energy vehicles, has announced plans to establish its European headquarters in Budapest, Hungary, alongside a new research and development (R&D) center. This move strengthens BYD’s commitment to localization in Europe, fostering economic growth and innovation in Hungary. The headquarters, located in Budapest’s 11th district, marks BYD’s fifth site in the country, following facilities in Komárom, Fót, Páty, and a forthcoming passenger-car plant in Szeged.

Key Highlights

  • Job Creation: The headquarters will generate thousands of high-value jobs in Budapest.
  • R&D Focus: Initial projects will advance intelligence in mobility and next-generation electrification technologies.
  • Education Partnerships: BYD will collaborate with at least three Hungarian universities for training and education.
  • Localization Commitment: The R&D center will produce patents, work with Hungarian startups, and engage domestic suppliers.
  • High-Skilled Workforce: At least 90% of R&D employees will have higher education qualifications.

The R&D center will drive innovation through two major projects. The first will integrate advanced intelligence into mobility solutions, enhancing vehicle functionality. The second will develop cutting-edge electrification technologies to support sustainable transportation. These efforts align with BYD’s strategy to deepen its European presence by prioritizing local talent, suppliers, and innovation.

BYD Chairman Wang Chuanfu emphasized the headquarters’ role as a hub for sales, after-sales services, vehicle certification, testing, and localized vehicle design. This approach aims to enhance BYD’s brand influence and ensure sustainable growth in Europe. Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán highlighted the strategic importance of attracting development and research capacities, noting that BYD’s investment marks a new era for Hungary’s automotive industry.

With a global footprint spanning six continents and over 100 countries, BYD continues to lead the transition to zero-emission energy solutions. This investment in Hungary reinforces its mission to deliver innovative, sustainable technologies for a greener future.
