BYD Extends Blade Battery Warranty to 250,000km

BYD extends Blade Battery warranty to eight years or 250,000km across Europe, covering existing owners and new purchases with minimum 70% State of Health guarantee.

BYD has announced an extension of its Blade Battery warranty coverage to eight years or 250,000km across the European market. The expanded warranty applies to both battery-electric vehicles and Super Hybrids, covering new purchases and existing owners.

Highlights

  • Warranty mileage increased from 150,000km to 250,000km with eight-year duration and minimum 70% State of Health guarantee retained
  • Coverage applies retroactively to existing BYD owners in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom
  • Blade Battery technology utilizes lithium iron phosphate chemistry, eliminating reliance on nickel and cobalt
  • Testing demonstrates over 3,000 charge cycles with service life equivalent to 1.2 million kilometers

Warranty Structure and Coverage

BYD’s New Energy Vehicles currently carry a basic warranty of six years or 150,000km, complemented by a 12-year unlimited-mileage anti-perforation warranty. The electric drive unit maintains coverage of eight years or 150,000km.

The battery-specific warranty now extends to 250,000km while retaining the eight-year duration and 70% minimum State of Health guarantee. Existing European owners with BYD EVs or Super Hybrids receive automatic coverage under the expanded terms.

Coverage applies within the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Vehicles used for mobility services or those under existing fleet warranty agreements are excluded, as is the BYD ETP3 model.

Blade Battery Technical Specifications

The Blade Battery employs lithium iron phosphate chemistry, a technology offering enhanced safety and durability without reliance on nickel or cobalt. BYD states this approach reduces environmental impact compared to conventional battery chemistries.

Testing has demonstrated the battery exceeds 3,000 charge and discharge cycles. BYD calculates this equates to a service life of approximately 1.2 million kilometers.

Safety Testing Results

The Blade Battery has undergone extensive safety evaluations. During nail-penetration testing, surface temperatures remained below 60°C—BYD reports this is ten times lower than conventional battery temperatures under identical conditions.

Additional testing includes:

  • Overcharge tests at up to 260% capacity
  • Oven tests at temperatures exceeding 300°C
  • Crushing tests and drop tests from significant heights
  • Saltwater-immersion testing

BYD states these results exceed international safety standards.

Structural Design Advantages

The blade-shaped cell design allows each unit to function as a transverse structural element. This configuration increases overall torsional rigidity while providing protection against impacts and deformation.

BYD reports the compact cell integration reduces occupied volume by 50% compared to traditional battery configurations. This space efficiency enables optimization of interior cabin space and vehicle packaging.

Performance Benchmarks

BYD cites the following performance examples across its lineup:

  • BYD SEAL Design: 570km range in combined cycle testing
  • BYD SEALION 7 Excellence AWD: Maximum DC charging power of 230 kW with 30% to 80% charge achieved in 18 minutes
