BYD Launches Biofuel Super Hybrid Vehicle

BYD has unveiled a groundbreaking Super Hybrid vehicle with biofuel compatibility in Brazil. This innovation marks the company's 14 millionth new-energy vehicle and accompanies plans to double local production capacity.

BYD, a leading global manufacturer of new-energy vehicles, has introduced a significant breakthrough in powertrain technology with its first Super Hybrid vehicle with biofuel compatibility. This innovative system, developed specifically for the Brazilian market, makes its debut in the special edition SONG PRO COP30, which will be donated to the upcoming UN climate summit in Brazil.

Revolutionary Biofuel Hybrid Technology

The new Super Hybrid system was revealed during a ceremony at BYD’s final-assembly facility in Camaçari, Brazil. The vehicle features DM-i (Dual Mode Intelligent) technology, which prioritizes an EV driving experience by using the combustion engine primarily as a power generator for the battery, even in hybrid mode.

Engineers from China and Brazil collaborated to adapt the 1.5-liter Super Hybrid engine to run on any ratio of gasoline and ethanol, Brazil’s most popular green fuel. This customization ensures strong performance and high efficiency while leveraging the country’s existing renewable energy infrastructure. Wang Chuanfu, BYD’s founder and CEO, called the technology “a green and sustainable solution tailor-made for Brazil.”

Production Milestone and UN Partnership

The ceremony, attended by Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, also marked an unprecedented industry milestone as a SONG PRO COP30 became BYD’s 14 millionth new-energy vehicle produced globally. In a gesture of commitment to global climate goals, BYD is donating thirty examples of this special edition vehicle to COP30, the United Nations climate summit to be held in Brazil.

“Incorporating ethanol into our DM-i architecture represents a historic advance,” stated Tyler LI, President of BYD Brazil. “We value the national renewable energy matrix… a crucial step toward consolidating Brazil as a global leader in sustainable mobility.”

Commitment to Brazilian Expansion

The new Brazilian factory, built in just 15 months, is the largest electric vehicle production facility in Latin America and BYD’s largest outside of Asia. It currently employs over 1,500 people, with an initial production capacity of 150,000 vehicles per year, planned to increase to 300,000.

During a meeting with President Lula, Wang Chuanfu confirmed a new investment to double its annual production capacity from the planned 300,000 to up to 600,000 units per year.

“BYD believes in the growth potential of the Brazilian market and will continue to invest to help boost the economy, create jobs, and train the workforce,” said Stella Li, BYD Executive Vice President and CEO for the Americas and Europe.
