BYD SHARK Pickup Priced From £47,290 in UK

BYD prices its first pickup, the SHARK Super Hybrid, from £47,290 in the UK. The DMO plug-in hybrid delivers 436 PS, 55.9 miles of EV range, and a 419-mile combined range.

BYD has priced its first pickup, the SHARK Super Hybrid, from £47,290 (about $63,225) in the UK, pairing a 436 PS plug-in hybrid powertrain with up to 55.9 miles of pure-electric range. The double-cab arrives on BYD’s Dual Mode Off-road (DMO) Super Hybrid platform, which combines a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine with two electric motors to drive all four wheels. BYD, the world’s leading manufacturer of new-energy vehicles, says the SHARK can travel 419 miles on a full charge and a full tank of gasoline. Orders are open now, with UK deliveries due in the fourth quarter of 2026.

Highlights

  • 436 PS (650 Nm) combined system output takes the SHARK from 0-62 mph in 5.7 seconds
  • 55.9 miles of WLTP electric-only range from a 32.2 kWh Blade Battery — the largest in the pickup segment
  • DC fast charging takes the battery from 30% to 80% in 21 minutes; a full AC charge from 15% takes just over three hours
  • 2,500 kg (5,512 lb) towing capacity and a 1,200-liter load bed, with 790 kg (1,742 lb) maximum payload

A Super Hybrid Built for Off-Road and Efficiency

The SHARK’s DMO Super Hybrid system pairs a longitudinally mounted 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with two electric motors — 231 PS/310 Nm at the front and 204 PS/340 Nm at the rear — for a combined 436 PS and 650 Nm of torque. Most of the time, the gasoline engine works as a generator, feeding either the motors directly or the 32.2 kWh Blade Battery mounted at the heart of the platform.

BYD says the powertrain cycles through four operating modes: pure EV, HEV Series (where the engine generates electricity in city driving), HEV Parallel (engine and motors working together under hard acceleration), and direct engine drive at sustained highway speeds. An intelligent all-wheel-drive system adjusts torque delivery across sand, mud, snow and gravel, aided by double-wishbone suspension front and rear and standard Hill Descent Control.

The Blade Battery is integrated into the ladder-frame chassis using Cell-to-Chassis (CTC) construction, which BYD says increases structural rigidity while protecting the battery in rough conditions. More than half the SHARK’s structure uses high-strength steel, and BYD rates the combined structure’s torsional strength at 34,048 Nm/deg.

Design Draws on the Shark’s Namesake

BYD’s design team drew on the shark itself for the pickup’s styling, most visibly in the front-end lighting, which is pulled to the outer edges of the fascia to evoke the animal’s eyes, and in the grille and lower bumper shaping that echoes an open mouth. At the rear, a full-width lightbar spans the tailgate, bracketed by taillights set at the vehicle’s outer edges.

The SHARK measures 5,457 mm long, 1,971 mm wide and 1,925 mm tall on a 3,260 mm wheelbase, with approach and departure angles of 31 degrees and 19.3 degrees, respectively. Inside, BYD’s two-screen layout pairs a 10.25-inch digital instrument panel with a 15.6-inch central touchscreen — which the company describes as the largest in any pickup — while a flat rear floor and 27-degree seatback angle are intended to give rear passengers SUV-level space.

Standard Equipment Across a Single Trim

The SHARK is sold in one trim level, with BYD equipping every unit with:

  • Vegan-leather upholstery plus heated and ventilated front seats
  • 12-speaker Dynaudio sound system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Head-up display paired with the 15.6-inch infotainment screen and navigation
  • 6.6 kW Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) with two power sockets, accessible via the AC charging port or a dedicated socket in the load bed
  • 360-degree camera with front and rear parking sensors, plus keyless entry and start

Driver-assistance features include Adaptive Cruise Control, Front and Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Brake, Forward and Rear Collision Warning, Lane Departure Assistant with Emergency Lane Keeping Assist, and Blind Spot Detection. BYD lists seven airbags, ISOFIX mounts on the rear seats, Child Presence Detection and a Tire Pressure Monitoring System among the SHARK’s standard safety equipment.

Pricing and UK Availability

The SHARK is available in five exterior colors — Atlantis Blue, Obsidian Black, Polar White, Grey Green and Sunrise Orange — on standard 18-inch black-and-silver two-tone alloy wheels, with all-black 18-inch wheels offered as an option. Pricing starts at £47,290 including VAT, with orders open now and UK deliveries scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2026.

BYD Executive Vice President Stella Li said: “This type of vehicle really benefits from our DMO Super Hybrid technology, offering pure-electric capability, the most power in the class, excellent off-road capability, outstanding efficiency and long-distance flexibility. And our innovative approach to technology delivers stand-out features, including V2L that can really help at work and play.”

Note for US readers: BYD reports range and efficiency figures under the WLTP test cycle, which typically yields higher figures than the EPA cycle used for comparable US ratings.
